Reflexology For The Spirit

spirituality of one's health

Reiki and Me: A Personal Transformation

Flashback to the 90’s.

I lived in the Washington, D.C. metro area when I went to the dogs.

I took my complete professional wardrobe (conservative suits, white blouses,  natural colored stockings,  sensible shoes, and matching power jewelry) to the  Ft. Belvoir Thrift Shop and said “goodbye” to my past life.

I dusted off my massage therapy certificate which I earned from the Potomac MyoTherapy Institute in 1980.  (I wrote about PMTI in my wellness book “Healer’s Handbook”.)

I practiced massage therapy and foot reflexology as far beneath the radar screen as I could get.  Except for my clients, my goal was “invisible”.

And, I studied canine massage therapy, more foot reflexology,  and animal communication at different workshops and classes around the country.

Names like Jonathan Rudinger, Penelope Smith, Dawn Hayman, Marge D’Urso, and Bill Flocco bring up extremely fond memories.

This is where my life took a change.

I attended an introductory canine massage therapy class in Clinton, New York, at Spring Farm CARES.  At the first (of many) class I attended there, every other student in the class was a Reiki practitioner or master.

Not only was I the only student not attuned to Reiki, I couldn’t even spell it.

Don’t get me wrong.  Reiki wasn’t a part of the curriculum in this class.  It was simply a part of each student’s credentials and vocabulary.

I was intrigued by this healing technique they all knew and used.  As soon as I returned home I began searching to find out about Reiki and how was it taught.   I  asked everyone I knew about it.  Keep in mind, this was the Northern Virginia suburbs where not even massage was legal.

It was also just before computers became common. I didn’t yet know about  Google.

What I really wanted to know was where I could find a teacher.  I definitely didn’t like being the only person in a class not connected to something that was obviously important to the rest of the people in the room.

While searching for a teacher, I discovered  only 6 Reiki books.  One title I remember: “Essential Reiki” by Diane Stein.

I also learned that two friends were Reiki Masters.  In seeking a Reiki Master Teacher, I learned that people I knew very well were keeping deep dark secrets from the world.  The secrets?  Reiki.

Amazing:  Knowing that a close friend’s deepest, darkest secret was Reiki says  things about my close friends, about Reiki, and about Virginia.

Kathy Levin and Barbara Kaplan were healing people and not even sharing their skills with anyone.  And, finally, they weren’t even whispering the names of their teachers.  Both women claimed to have learned Reiki years before.  Their stories could have been begun with “Long ago and far away…”

I dug and dug and finally found a metaphysical gift shop in Vienna, VA which taught a variety of interesting things on the weekends.  Reiki was buried in a long list of interesting spiritual-sounding classes at Terra Christa.

Needless to say, Mary Ruth Van Landingham and her classes were a gold mine for me.  I learned nine different types of Reiki and a whole host of other things.  For the next few years, I was a student in most of the weekend classes in Mary Ruth’s classroom behind her shop.

Soon, Reiki joined my below-the-radar healing sessions of reflexology, massage therapy, canine massage therapy, animal communication.

The Reiki training I received fit well into every service I offered.

Not in the Reiki category, but important:  Dan Chesbro ordained me at Terra Christa.  Throughout the years, most of my Reiki students reached out to Dan Chesbro for ordination.

Mary Ruth Van Landingham planted the seed for my first book “Healer’s Handbook”.  It took years from Mary Ruth’s guiding suggestion to an actual book. My life experiences had to catch up with the text.

While all this was happening on the weekends, something else happened that was quiet, calm, positive, and distinct.

My life changed.  I turned some kind of spiritual corner.

Reiki is  not necessarily an out-loud modality.  Reiki touches every life differently.  After all, we’re all each individual and unique.

It became a part of my life without much fanfare.  And, it was certainly easy to learn.  Through the years, it’s become such a part of my life that sometimes I feel I don’t give it enough credit.

Reiki is automatic and quiet.  Reiki doesn’t need a lot of attention.  It stays with me.  It doesn’t need equipment  and it doesn’t require periodic recertifications.

I use Reiki and reflexology together regularly.  They work hand-in-glove without the need of a prescription.

I’m grateful for the healing modalities I’ve learned throughout my life.  They  served my clients and students well.  Sometimes I feel I don’t give Reiki and reflexology the credit they deserve.

When I think about it, part of the usefulness of Reiki and reflexology is that they don’t need attention.  They don’t need credit.  They just do the work.

SO, thank you Reiki and reflexology.

And, thank you to everyone who has read and does read this blog.  Thanks for buying the books and thank you for referring me to your friends, relatives, and neighbors.

I regularly invite Reiki practitioners to come on my show to discuss and receive Reiki.

One Way to Explore and Expand Your Path

We are, each of us, on a unique path.

You may follow your path from childhood and continue throughout your life, honoring your traditions.

Or, you may create your own path, making meaning out of each new step.

Wherever you are on your journey, your path is yours alone.  Only you occupy your space.

One thing you can do to help yourself advance on your path is to journal.    Because your path is yours alone, your journal will help you reflect on life’s meanings and what they teach you.

You can create your journal from an old tablet you found lying around on a table.  Or, you can create your a journal as a work of art with drawings, photos, paintings, and a creative cover.  Or, your journal can be anywhere between these two styles.

However you decide to create your journal, it can help you explore your spirituality.

Whatever you do to create your journal, it can help you explore the wonders of your life.  The words of your journal will help you learn more about how you think and feel.  This will help you create a deeper connection with your self and your path.

Your journal entries will help you explore your beliefs and how you feel and think about them.

The spiritual exploration offered by your journal will enhance and strengthen  your path.

Thanks for reading this article.

It is not intended to change your story or offer therapy.  It is written to offer a conduit to your own healing journey’s path.

How About a New Year Detox?

This year, my daughter and I gave my spouse an iPad for a holiday gift.  We were all excited.  Barry is now going to get to enjoy connecting with the world while sitting in his recliner with his feet up.

This piece of modern technology is a win for all of us.  He’s enjoying the world and I’m enjoying seeing his feet elevated!

Technology makes so much of his daily experience:  he is constantly on the phone, checking emails and social media pages, typing reports and filling out forms.

He is also continually absorbing electromagnetic waves from his electronic equipment.

Now, by the end of the day, he appears bleary-eyed.  His skin looks pale.  I’m willing to bet that his mind is on overload also.   From the looks of things, his new iPad has a down side as well as an upside.

We finally all agreed with him that things were not necessarily what we hoped for.  Having his feet elevated while entertaining himself was a goal but he was paying a price for all this fun.

He finally decided to schedule periodic brakes and time-outs.  He scheduled detox brakes.

So, now, at a certain point in the day, he turns off his phone, iPad, laptop and all other electronic equipment.  He removes his equipment from his area.

Now, instead, he takes time to visit with us, review his day, or reads a book or the New York Times.

This break refreshes him.  He feels that he’s grounded and he realizes that there is more to his life than the contents of a screen or speaker.

A periodic digital detox works for us all in different ways.  For example, if you’re working from home, it’s important to take detox breaks throughout the day to maintain your work production.

Actually, whatever project you may have going throughout the day will benefit from a digital detox break.  If nothing else, leave your project for a few minutes and have a glass of water.  Water has energizing effects which we all need throughout the day.

Beginning and ending your activities with a 10-minute Reiki or reflexology session will improve your project results.  Even a short break is good to promote homeostasis, something our bodies all need.

Reflexology sessions relax, balance, and heal the whole body.

Everything always goes better with reflexology!

5 Ways Make Your Life Better and Easier in 2024, Starting NOW

NOW IS THE TIME

Take a time out to reflect on your journey in 2023.  I know.  I know.  The year isn’t even over yet and what surprises are waiting for us?

But, spend a few minutes reviewing the past year to prepare yourself for 2024.

Now, spend a few more minutes to celebrate the new year coming up.  Cook a yummy meal.  And, while you’re at it, turn on some good music and dance a bit in the kitchen.

Prepare for the new year with a fresh start and include, front and center, bold capitals, your GRATITUDE.  How far have you come this year?

When you are celebrate the coming of 2024, include  a new project.  Pick something to open your mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual selves to new ideas.

STEP 1

NOW IS THE TIME

Things you may do to get ready for 2024 can include –

smudge your space,

set up a gratitude altar,

Reiki everything.

Send a ‘thank you’ card or note to someone you haven’t checked in with in too long ago

Collect a box of items to give away or release to the universe.

While you’re focusing on these things (and others you’ve thought up on your own), honor your intuition.  After all, your intuition is the voice of your soul talking with you.

STEP 2

NOW IS THE TIME

On another day, as you think of 2024 –

light a candle.

Pick up a project you worked on months or weeks ago and then set down.

Think kind thoughts for yourself by writing a list of your very best qualities.

Take a few moments to hear from your deepest wisdom.

Give or receive a reflexology or other healing session.

STEP 3

NOW IS THE TIME

On yet another day or evening, as you welcome 2024 –

Connect yourself with your physical surroundings.

They, along with your physical self, will be supporting you in the coming year.

Open yourself to being and seeing your surroundings.  Gain inspiration from your

spiritual self to support your environment.

Do you have an occasional energy deficit?

Never forget that your energy is boundless.  All you need is within you.

You may not feel you have all the energy you want.  But, never forget,

everything that you need is right there, in front of you.

Take several deep breaths.  The air around you brings whispers as it nudges you along to the new year.  It brings truth, inspiration, and new ideas for 2024.

When the air brings its gifts, the element of fire comes along to help you.

STEP 4

NOW IS THE TIME

Your free will always boosts your journey.  That is no exception as you enter 2024.

As the new year progresses, you may gain a deeper understanding of what is happening if you journal about events and people that make you the most uncomfortable.

Don’t forget to enhance your meditations and journaling with your favorite crystals.

STEP 5

NOW IS THE TIME

In 2024, stay in touch with your intuition:

Go for a swim.

Take a bath or shower.

Meditate while sitting on the earth.

Go for a walk in nature.

NOW IS THE TIME

Self-Care is Kindness to Ourselves

Self-Care asks us to give the same kindness to ourselves that we give to others.

When you have negative or critical thoughts about yourself, stop for a moment and ask yourself this:  “Would I say these things about a good friend?”

The chances are that you would not.  You would not be unkind to someone else.

Now, try being as kind to yourself as you would to a loved one.

The next time things go wrong, accept the event for what it is.  Then, apologize for what happened if that’s appropriate.  Then, forgive yourself.

Learning from mistakes and moving on is a positive way to get through life.

Forgiving yourself is what allows you to get through life.  When you forgive yourself, you are being nice to yourself.  It’s easier to be happy that way.

When you forgive yourself, you are offering self-care.  This sends nourishing messages to the brain about your self-worth.

Try, every day, to care for yourself in every way possible.

When stress accumulates, this facial massage meditation will relieve muscles and leave you feeling better.

     Facial Massage Meditation

For many of us, the day’s stress accumulates in the muscles of the head, face, and jaw.  Massaging your face and head can smooth the tiny muscles and nerve endings.  Stress and fatigue will have a chance to disappear.

Begin this meditation by finding a quiet place where you will be undisturbed for a few minutes.

Lie flat on a chair, bed, or floor, with your face up.   If that is not comfortable, find a comfortable chair or recliner to sit comfortably.

Cover your body with a light blanket or sheet so you won’t get cold as your body relaxes and cools.

Take several deep breaths.  Begin these breaths in your abdominal area.  Breathe in deeply and hold the breath to the count of three:  1 – 2 – 3.

Now slowly release the breath.  When you exhale, you release toxins and stress.

Repeat these inhalations and exhalations 1-2 minutes.  As you inhale, you l breathe in healthy air.  With each exhalation, you release toxins and stress.

Become aware of your forehead.  Mentally relax your forehead to erase wrinkles of expression…the space between your eyebrows becomes bigger.  Your eyelids are heavy.

Move your fingers to your forehead and slowly massage it in small circles.

When you feel that your forehead is becoming relaxed, move your fingers to your temples and gently move them in clockwise and counterclockwise motions.  Feel this area relaxing.

Notice the tension behind your eyes, and around your eyes and release it.

Now, place your fingers on your temples and move your fingers in small, gentle dime-size circles for a few minutes.

Move your fingers down to your chin and gently, gently pinch your chin and along your jawline to your ears.

Now, move your hands to your cheeks.  Massage your soft cheek tissue in a circular motion.

Now, move your hands to your ears.  Gently massage along the edges of your ears for a couple of moments.   Now, give your ears some long, luscious pulls.

You are finishing your facial massage now.  Notice any thoughts, feelings, or sensations you experience now.

Stay quiet for 1-2 minutes while you enjoy and refresh from this experience.

It is time now to return to the present time.

It is okay to return to this place of calm whenever you need.

The goal of this meditation is to experience calm and relaxation using self-touch.

What to do When it all Gets to be Too Much: Switch Off The Day

The times are overwhelming.  It’s as if everyone is “always on”.  I find that when I’m always connected, things can quit working.  When I’m always connected, I find myself staring at screens, answering every door bell and phone ring.

When things quit working, one of the most effective  things I do is switch everything off.  This includes me.  I switch off – both physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

I turn off electronic devices.  The phone goes off.  The computer shuts down.  The TV is off.  I turn off all the lights.

And, you know what?  almost everything works better after I’ve unplugged it for a few minutes.  And, that includes me.

And, then, I get in my most comfortable chair and  give myself a Reiki therapy session.

I begin the session with the symbols and three hand positions to my head.  My intention is to relax so that I won’t be so fatigued and overwhelmed.

Now…I know that switching everything off can be difficult.  In some cases, it’s impossible. I also know that there comes a time when saying “no” is not selfish.

An important lesson I had to learn as an adult is that when everybody is getting oxygen masks, we sometimes each need to get our own oxygen mask first so we can make sure everyone else is being properly cared for.

So, becoming comfortable with “no” and “off” is something that I had to learn in life.

A life lesson I had to learn was that some people stress me out.  Learning to recognize  stressor people and situations was (is) important.  Once stressors are are recognized, it is easy to avoid them.

Life is more pleasant, less complicated,  and easier when stressors are recognized and minimized.

Reiki sessions help.  Both Reiki and reflexology promote relaxation and a more positive outlook.

Emergency Reiki sessions are a dramatic improvement.  They work even better when they are a supplement to regularly scheduled Reiki therapy sessions.

Finding Time

My schedule is packed.  It’s jammed.

But, that’s okay. It’s an uptown problem.

Each day, I know I’m going to find some real jewels throughout my schedule.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is this:  When my schedule is totally out of control, the universe will deal with the situation.  Someone will cancel or something quirky will happen which will result in a beautiful hole.

Finding time is like finding a wonderful, shiny object.

It’s not so important to worry about what or when or how much time you’re going to find..

Those are details.

What’s important is to be prepared…

Know what you’re going to do when you find a few extra 5 or 6 minutes or maybe even a whole hour.  These are perfect moments in your day that can be used however you want.  Make your “found time” list.

Get lost in a book.

Go for a quick stroll.

Sip a tea.

Meditate.

Plan.

Journal.

Stare out the window – even if you’re not in front of a window.

Disconnect.

Switch off.

Whatever you do with these “found” moments, the important thing is to carve out these pockets of time for yourself.

Use a Little Self-Care to Live Mindfully & Look After Yourself.

I don’t know about you, but I have days that get away from me.  Sometimes, the idea that I can take a few minutes out for exercise, or meditation, or whatever, is just flirting with non-reality.

So, what do I do to assure that I have given myself some much-needed self-care even in times of chaos and stress?

I keep a gratitude journal.

This little book takes almost no space on my desk or in my purse.  It attracts little attention.  But, this little book is powerful!

My gratitude journal:

makes sure that I don’t take blessings for granted.

prevents me from getting so caught up in my daily life that I forget to appreciate what I have.

encourages me to become aware of all the ways I am fortunate.

I may not write paragraphs or essays in this journal.  Some days I write down just a few words.  These words may include hugging a loved one, seeing the little bunny chew a flower in my garden, or eating a delicious red grape.

Words are not always necessary.  Sometimes my gratitude journal is a page with colors:

It’s the little things that change my thoughts and bring peace to my world.  While relaxation is not the end goal, it’s a common side effect of a gratitude moment.  This quiet, sometimes secret, moment changes how my body is feeling.

This moment helps understand the experience.

This is gratitude.

Is your life overcrowded and cluttered? Add Self-Care!

Do you ever somehow find yourself in a place where you know you need to get back to your basic self.  Things remind you it’s time to return yourself to your heart.

These reminders may include fatigue, anxiety, insomnia, loneliness, burnout, or foggy thinking.

You wake up one day, or a moment in one day, realizing that you are spending 80% of your time scanning, scrolling, downloading, and editing.  And you’re spending only 20% of your time processing all those things you’ve been inputting.

Or maybe you are spending 80% of your time frantically chasing tasks which have no meaning for you but are on the “necessary list” anyway.

Alas, it’s the old 80-20 law at work again.  The essential  processing is getting 20% of your focus and the scanning and scrolling are getting 80%.

There ARE things you can do to help you find your heart.

Try self-care.  Self-care can be magical because it comes from inside yourself where you process important things better.

Suddenly, the 20% takes on renewed color and shape and form as it becomes the center-stage activity it should have been all along.

But, where do you begin?  Begin with intention.  Whatever you choose for your self-care therapy, if you begin with intention, inspiration will follow.

So, how do you start this new project?

Begin with trust.  Trust that your intuition will inspire you to know what is calling you. Your intuition will allow you to try different things and focus on what appeals to you.  Self-care can be many different things.  It can be one thing.

As you begin to explore self-care, allow yourself to respond to what appeals to you.  Let your heart guide you to what you need.

Let’s say that you are attracted to essential oils.  Or, maybe you always wanted to begin a meditation practice.  These two options can be followed one at a time or together.

The important thing is that you listen to what is calling to you.

Whatever self-care tools you explore and use, you  connect to your body to support your spiritual, mental, and emotional self.

One good beginning option is to create a daily movement ritual.  The options are many here:  dance, walking, massage, reflexology, Reiki, exercise, stretches.

When you choose a movement practice, you connect with your body and build a relationship with your power.

This daily movement ritual promotes gratitude.  It builds resilience and inspires your creativity.  You will set your endorphins free!  You will serve those around you better.

You will build a relationship with your power.  Joy and mood stability become part of the package.

But, whatever self-care journey you explore, there is no perfect way to explore the options.  Use what calls to you.  Maybe you seek something which feels comfortable to you.  Whatever calls to you, allow yourself to explore whatever feels natural to you.

My Daughter Needed a Time-Out. Here’s what happened.

I teach in my reflexology class about our need for a time-out and how our feet and hands work with the universe to provide it:

“Mom is on her way to the Albany Medical Center Emergency Room!  Can you meet us there?”  My youngest granddaughter was talking about her mother.

Dropping everything, I drove to Albany to the E.R.

After what seemed like an endless wait, we were able to see Jennette  for a few

minutes.  If you could call it that.  What we saw was a mound of bandages on a gurney headed for the ICU.

Our first report revealed broken legs, feet, arms, hands, hips, ribs, and pelvis.

We learned about damaged organs:  liver – spleen.

And – this was just the first report!

In my heart of hearts, I knew this was a long time coming.  For several years, Jennette had been working too much – several times over.  She taught school. In  in the evenings, she created a dramatic show about breast cancer which was showcased in various galleries in the area.

On weekends, Jennette painted plein air landscapes.  She also had these creations in several galleries in the area.

Frankly, Jennette was working about 80 hours a week.  And, how could any of us criticize her?  Her work was moving.  Audiences loved her message.  She was a successful art teacher and her gallery pieces were dramatic.

In her spare time, Jennette looked for a house.

Well, her body knew better.  Reflexology teaches that if a person continues to push the body beyond its abilities, the result is an injury to a foot or hand which insists on rest.

So, one day, Jennette was in the drop-off area at the Albany Airport when a man in a huge pickup truck behind her shifted into drive instead of park and flattened her against the rear of the SUV in front of where she stood.

After three weeks in the ICU and another two weeks adjusting bandages and casts, Jennette is headed to the 8th floor Rehab unit.

My younger daughter, Michele, took some days off from her job as a hospice nurse in Arizona, to come offer support.

Jennette’s two grown children extended their stays to offer support.  Michele taught Zoe how to care for Jennette.

About 10 days into the healing, I gathered us all together with some supportive friends.  We met in the large 2nd floor lobby area of the Albany Medical Center and I offered a prayer:

“Guide us, Archangel Michael, through our days.  Protect us all through the trials and tribulations of healing that away Jennette, and us all, today and into the future.

Archangel Michael, we thank you for the blanket of protection that you use to shield us as we remain in your protection on this healing journey.  We thank you and your bank of protection and healing angels who keep us all safe.

Keep us on the healing path.  Protect us from physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual harm and negativity.

Please protect and assist Jennette, Michele, Zoey, Sangi, Barry, and all of those who are not here with us physically today: Sophia, Michelle Aqualino, Raymond, Julie, and others.

We are bound together by relationships, events, employment, healthcare activities, and spiritual paths.  Assist us each in our personal healing journey as we travel together.

Archangel Michael, we trust in your capabilities, and your angelic experience.  We thank you for all that You have done and made possible for Jennette’s healing path and success.

Further, we thank you for calling on your band of protection and making this all possible through your Divinity.

We thank you for all you have done for us.

Amen.”

She is now catching up on some much-needed rest and recuperation. and well throughout our days.

We are Ecstatic!

So what is the message here?  Listen to your body and your soul.  Rest when you are tired.

Follow your bliss!

Get to know Jennette better at jnearhood.com.

I’ve written several books – some with international appeal.  One example is:

The third edition of “Healer’s Handbook” is illustrated here.  It’s gone out to more than 30 countries so far.

This is the second edition.  It has 6 fewer chapters than the third edition.

All of my books are available in paper as well as ebook editions.

An upcoming book is “But for Gabriel” which is only available in ebook in the first edition:

The 2nd edition will be available in paper as well as ebook.  This story has all the tickets: animals, angels, a young mother and her baby, and a magical moving star.  Finally, this story has a long journey.

What more could I ask for?  I had to write this story!  An installment of it is on “Let’s Live”.  I read a shortened version of it on my show “Let’s Live”.
