Emphysema, a Spiritual Disease connected to Stress
Spiritually, emphysema is a fear of absorbing life. You are worn out with stress and worry because of your sense of foreboding. For you, life is a struggle and you cannot live in the moment. Grief is woven in all this.

The most important thing to do is stop smoking. Stay away from secondhand smoke, chemical fumes, and automobile exhaust.
Regular exercise is crucial because it increases your lung capacity.
Wear a cold air mask or scarf over your nose and mouth before going outside.
Get your flu shots annually and include a pneumonia vaccination when it’s time. Keep your indoor environment clean of toxins\
Avoid stress with tai chi, qi gong, meditation.
Regular reflexology, Reiki, or chakra healing sessions will invite homeostasis, something you can benefit from. The regular sessions will also calm anxiety and stress.

Constipation, a Spiritual Problem We all Have Occasionally (At Least)
Spiritually, you are stuck in the past, refusing to give up old ideas. You hold onto safe beliefs. Learning to release the past is an important process when you combat constipation on a spiritual level. Fear of the unknown is definitely part of the mix. As you move into the future, less worry and fear help. Focus on deepening your contact with your power center. Finally, develop feelings of self-respect.
Try to connect with your power center and respect yourself more deeply.
Some people feel three bowel movements a day is normal. Others feel three movements a week is normal. Infrequent bowel movements, hard stools, abdominal discomfort are common.
A low-fiber diet and dehydration contribute to constipation. Other triggers include too much processed food, stress, not enough exercise.
Reflexology sessions comfort the digestive process. People receiving reflexology sessions regularly claim to not have problems with bowel irregularity.
This claim is especially popular with parents of young children who have problems with bowel movements. Children who receive reflexology sessions have a difficult time being constipated.
Constipation is a condition can require the attention of a medical professional. isit your physician to rule out any underlying medical conditions. This is especially true if your constipation comes on suddenly or if there’s blood in your stool.
Marge d’Urso, my reflexology teacher, taught us to expect fifty per cent of our client partners to have issues with constipation. The good news is that the condition seldom continues as regular reflexology sessions progress. This is true of both children and adults. Her teachings make regular reflexology sessions the backbone of constipation resolution.
CHAKRA
Constipation is a first and third chakra imbalance.
REFLEXOLOGY SYSTEMS TO WORK
liver, gall bladder, diaphragm, endocrine system, lower spine, ileocecal valve, sigmoid
When your reflexologist works the digestive system in a reflexology session, your intestinal tract will begin to normalize itself.
When you receive reflexology sessions regularly to deal with constipation, you will probably feel better, have more energy, look better, have a more positive outlook on life, and develop better eating habits.
A colon cleanse followed by a liver cleanse along with regularly scheduled reflexology sessions will improve things.
ESSENTIAL OILS
anise, fennel, ginger, lemon, mandarin, peppermint, rosemary, sweet orange, tarragon
EFFECTIVE HEALING FIELDS
Conventional medicine, Traditional Chinese medicine, Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Herbalism. Complimentary, Alternative, and Integrative medicine all have theories, remedies, and modalities to help with your constipation. Indeed, so many people in our country have constipation that it seems everyone suffers with it.
IMPORTANT FOODS IN YOUR DIET
brown rice, dried fruits, fresh fruits, green vegetables, leafy vegetables, oats, pine nuts, yogurt
RISK FACTORS
insufficient fluids, low fiber, high fat diet, not getting enough vitamin C, sedentary lifestyle
THINGS TO TRY
Things which may help improve overall digestive health include dry brushing after bathing, using a mini trampoline regularly to clean the lymphatic system. Prebiotics and probiotics help. Consuming more dietary fiber regularly along with sufficient fluids is essential. Finally, avoid stress whenever possible. Exercise daily. Include high-fiber foods, whole-grain breads, leafy vegetables. Regular reflexology sessions help.
QUESTIONS TO ASK
What is it about the unknown that I am afraid of? How can I trust the unknown parts of my life? What is holding me back from what I want to do?

Alzheimer’s Disease: This Spiritual Disease is in Your Life Years Before You Know it.
Spiritually, you are overwhelmed with your life’s path and want to run away to another time. You do not want to live your life the way it is now because you lost your sense of belonging. With memory loss, you escaped your roots, your place in your society, and your heritage.
I read somewhere that from one third to one half of people over eighty suffer with this dread disease. I believe these numbers may be overstated. Health professionals write about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia with much less certainty than they give their words to heart disease and diabetes.
My experience with Alzheimer’s Disease insists that I share this: much that is written may not apply to your loved one’s situation, no matter the circumstances.
Professionals believe Alzheimer’s has genetic, lifestyle, and environmental causes. Alzheimer’s develops slowly, over time. The same things that put you at risk for heart disease also put you at risk for this disease: sedentary lifestyle, smoking, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol scores.
Alzheimer’s patients have trouble thinking, speaking, reasoning, and writing. The personality changes over time. Disorientation is common and personality changes are to be expected. One early warning behavior includes asking the same question over and over and over. A second behavior is forgetting to do familiar things. Finally, misplacing things and finding them in unusual places is a red flag.
Do you practice Reiki therapy, reflexology, or chakra healing? Offering sessions of these modalities can be one of the most significant things you will ever do for an Alzheimer’s patient. Your sessions are a way to spiritually communicate and connect with a person when words no longer work.
Are you a Reiki Master Teacher? Teaching Reiki to a caregiver can be an important gift for both the caregiver and patient. Other people living in the household can be attuned to Reiki. This includes the pets and children.
Alzheimer’s Disease is a thief of a disease. For starters, Alzheimer’s steals your brain. Then, it steals your body. Finally, it steals every penny in your bank and savings accounts.
CHAKRA:
Alzheimer’s is a seventh chakra imbalance.
SUGGESTED HEALING SYSTEMS:
Begin with Conventional medicine, Naturopathy, Homeopathy, and Herbalism. Supplement your allopathic medicine with complementary and alternative medicine techniques wherever possible.
Alzheimer’s Disease responds well to complementary, alternative, and integrative medicine techniques. For now, no treatment can stop the disease. The goal is to slow symptoms and offer whatever relief you can.
REFLEXOLOGY SYSTEMS TO WORK:
endocrine system, skeletal system, lymphatics, intestinal system, liver, solar plexus
ESSENTIAL OILS:
cedarwood, eucalyptus, frankincense, German chamomile, ginger, myrrh, nutmeg, patchouli, sandalwood, spikenard.
ACTIVITIES WHICH MAY HELP:
Regular exercise along with reflexology will improve your mood and maintain your health. You’ll sleep better and have fewer constipation problems.
Good nutrition is important.
A calm and stable environment helps.
Keep your schedule regulated.
EMOTIONS EXPERIENCED BY ALZHEIMER’S PATIENTS:
Anger, confusion, depression, fear, frustration, and fear are common. Anxiety is experienced when noise, being rushed, complicated tasks, or crowds happen.
ACTIVITIES TO REDUCE YOUR RISK OF ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE:
Mentally and socially stimulating activities can reduce your risk. Preventive steps include keeping physically and mentally active.
One of the most important things you can do is keep your heart strong. That means you should keep your blood pressure levels normal. Keep your cholesterol numbers, your weight, and type 2 diabetes numbers in the normal range.
Physical fitness can’t be over emphasized. Take a weekly exercise class. Power walking, swimming, running, regular gym workouts help.
Keep your job as long as you can. If you’re tired of the job you have, get another one. Whatever you do, never quit working.
Keep yourself socially connected to your community. A rich social life is important. Don’t let yourself be lonely.
Take continuing education classes. Learn crochet, carpentry, knitting, musical instruments, paintings, reading, sculpture, quilting. Challenge your mind.
Regular massage, reflexology, Reiki therapy sessions are beneficial. Surf the internet. Get organized. Care for others.
A good night’s sleep is one of the best things you can do to keep Alzheimer’s out of your life.
Don’t let yourself get depressed.
A hint: Do all of these things before you experience symptoms. You are fighting Alzheimer’s for years before you have symptoms.
RISK FACTORS:
Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, stress
IS SOMEONE YOU KNOW SUFFERING WITH ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE?
One of the most significant things you will ever do for an Alzheimer’s patient is offer reflexology, Reiki therapy and chakra healing sessions to that patient. Your sessions are a truly spiritual way to communicate and connect with a person when words no longer work.
DO YOU KNOW A REIKI MASTER TEACHER? ARE YOU A REIKI MASTER TEACHER:
Teaching Reiki to a person caring for an Alzheimer’s patient can be an important gift for the caregiver and patient both.

Allergies are a Spiritual Problem for Many of us
Spiritually, you (and all allergy sufferers) are having a power struggle experience. You battle inflammation, a major cause of disease in humans. Spiritual challenges plague you all year.
Work on accepting your world as safe and friendly. Seek your spiritual peace. You are annoyed and aggravated by other people and you worry about giving away your power. This challenges forgiveness when you blame others for negativity.
Allergies present year-round spiritual challenges. Many of your diseases can be food-based, but few allergies are food-based. Most allergy sufferers experience asthma, hay fever, sinusitis.
Pollen, animal dander, dust mites, mold usually cause many of your allergies. Even though few allergies are food-based, some foods commonly causing allergies include peanuts, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish, eggs, and milk. You can have allergies to bee and wasp stings. Sometimes these allergic reactions can be serious. Finally, you can have an allergic reaction to medications. A common medication causing an allergic reaction is penicillin.
Allergies are increasing. Common culprits are said to be increased stressful lifestyles, overexposure to food additives, insecticides, and synthetic chemicals.
Children risk developing allergies. Sometimes childhood allergies are outgrown. Finally, if you have asthma, you risk developing allergies.
Congestion, runny nose, nasal itching, and sneezing are irritating and persistent. To make matters worse, there is no real cure for allergies. The power struggle is yours.
Depending on the allergy, your symptoms may include hives (food or drug allergies). Your lips and tongue may swell (food or drug allergies). You may have a rash (drug, skin), or itching (hay fever, bug bite, drug allergies, skin allergy). If you have allergies, visit a reflexologist weekly. These sessions can also include Reiki and chakra healing. Using reflexology sessions to successfully treat allergies requires a strong commitment, not just a few visits. But, it’s no different with the reflexologist than with the allergist and the ENT specialist.
I received Reiki and reflexology sessions regularly for years and can vouch that going to the allergist and the ENT would never have been as successful without the regular reflexology and Reiki sessions to facilitate homeostasis. These regular sessions offered me a minor detox, and helped me get rid of the mucus. They helped manage my allergy side effects during treatment.
I’m convinced they both lessened and prevented sinus or hay fever attacks.
Regular reflexology and Reiki sessions prevent attack before they start.
If your allergies are still challenging with regular medication and reflexology, it’s time to visit an allergist. Allergists desensitize your allergies with weekly injections.
I’ve experienced allergy shots four different times in my life and can vouch for their effectiveness and lasting protection.
What is the source of your allergy? Get rid of it!
If you are sensitive to indoor allergens, use dust mite covers on mattresses and pillows. Eliminating house dust is important. Discard the curtains, stuffed animals, throw rugs. Wash your human and pet bedding often. Ditch the scented candles.
A good basic question is to ask: “Do I really need these dusty curtains, stuffed animals, throw rugs?”
Pets are often a source of allergic reactions. You shouldn’t have to give up your pets because you have allergies. You can reduce the allergens. It’s not as challenging as it seems.
Brush and bathe your pet weekly in hypoallergenic shampoo.’
Cats are easy to bathe too. All you have to do is avoid letting your cat hear the splashing water.
If your dog is long coated, consider having the coat trimmed short.
Some dog breeds who should not be cut down: collies, Labrador retrievers, shelties.
Regular visits to a professional groomer will help. Let the groomer know about your allergies. A good groomer will use special shampoos, special brushing and drying techniques to remove as much hair/coat dander as possible in a groom shop.
Better yet, find a groomer who comes to your home. Van groomers drive up to your home, take your pet out to the groom shop in the van and return your pet an hour or so later minus the extra coat, allergens, and anything else causing your allergic reactions.
Vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture frequently. Clean air filters regularly. Roaches and mice must go.
Use only products on your home, pets, car, and workplace which you are not allergic to. I clean my home, car, pets, and myself with Dr. Bronner’s soaps. I even use Dr. Bronner’s soap in my washing machine.
In the end, my home and pets are cleaner with the special products I use. I’m healthier because I have fewer respiratory problems. My life is less stressful.
I’m careful about shampoos and makeup. And, frankly, I use minimal makeup.
You’ll save money in the long run by consulting with a capable otolaryngologist and an allergist. Allergy shots are a natural method of desensitizing that can be effective for years.
I was eight years old the first time my mother took me to an allergist. She took me to see Dr. Russell Guill in Kerrville, Texas. Dr. Guill was a pediatrician who got his second speciailty I got allergy shots for three years that time. The desensitizing effects for this first round lasted for many years.
The last time I got a round of allergy shots, I was a Dr. Furst patient in Fairfax, Virginia. His specialties were otolaryngology and allergy. For me, this man was a near miracle worker. The entire time I was his patient, I had no sinus infections and few allergy attacks.
Recently, I’ve begun to get allergy desensitization through dr. Korbutz in Red Hook. Recently, I waited too long for this current round because I had two serious sinus infections that probably could have been prevented or diminished with weekly allergy injections.
After this second sinus infection which really was severe, I eagerly drive to Red Hook weekly for the shot. Only, it isn’t one. Every Tuesday afternoon I get two injections, one in each arm.
I’m grateful to every physician who gave me the shots throughout my life. Taking allergy shots may seem like a lot to do to get rid of allergies. But, over time, a better quality of life emerges. You’ll spend less money on over-the-counter preparations and prescription medications.
If you’re groaning because of your dread of injections, don’t even bother. The needles are so small, I never feel them.
CHAKRA:
Allergies are both fourth chakra imbalance.
REFLEXOLOGY SYSTEMS TO WORK:
respiratory system, immune system, sinuses, digestive system, endocrine system, liver and solar plexus
ESSENTIAL OILS:
eucalyptus, German or Roman chamomile, lavender, peppermint, tea tree
THINGS TO TRY:
Wash your shower curtain in hot water, Dr. Bronner’s soap and bleach monthly. If this seems like too much work, change your curtain monthly and discard the old one. Declutter your home by discarding anything you haven’t used in two or more years. Things you haven’t used are sitting around collecting dust and mold which you don’t need. Put a shelf by your front door and encourage everyone coming into your home to leave their shoes and boots outside. This keeps mold and outside dust and dirt outside the door.
FOODS TO INCLUDE IN YOUR DIET
Apples, berries, black tea, garlic, fresh fruits, garlic, kefir, leafy greens, lemon balm, mackerel, onions, oregano, red grapes, rosemary, salmon, sardines, sunflower seeds, sweet potatoes, tuna, fresh vegetables, walnuts, wheat germ, yogurt

10 Easy Ways to Live a Longer Life
Living a longer life is a commitment to a specific lifestyle which promotes good health. Your first step to living a longer life is making this commitment to long-term good health and longevity.
You begin this path to live a longer life and have long term good health when you realize and understand you can’t just blame your genes for your health. Your continued good health depends on developing habits and practicing useful things regularly that support your commitment.
Develop your plan for a longer life now. Plan how your life will be when you are in your 80’s, 90’s, or even 100. Will you be alert and active with friends? Will you be living alone? Will you be mentally alert?
Imagine yourself as a healthy person living a longer life. Focus on this goal. Be ready to make changes in your lifestyle to achieve the results you want.
Make regular reflexology sessions a part of your life.
For starters, review your diet. Are you consuming generous servings of vegetables and fruits? Do you eat lean protein every day? Do you eat whole grain foods, brown rice, nuts, and legumes? (I’ll cover the diet portion of a longevity lifestyle in future posts.)
Meanwhile…
Take care to prevent overeating. If you eat a proper diet in the proper amounts, you should have energy, you will slow the aging process, and you will postpone or prevent chronic diseases.
If you can prevent overeating, your body will be able to handle more types of stress, something that’s important if you are concerned about living a long life.
Develop a daily walking routine. Walking 10,000 steps each day will increase blood flow to the brain resulting in an improved memory. How can you do this? Walk more. Walk during your lunch hour. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Make it a goal to get off your seat and on your feet. Choose volunteer activities which require walking.
Take your vitamins! But, not just any vitamins. You don’t want to waste your money on nutrients you don’t need. Do some research. Make your knowledge current before you decide which vitamins to take. I’ll share more information about minerals and vitamins in future blog posts. For now, I suggest you look into vitamin D3. Find out for yourself if that’s a vitamin you need. When you take your vitamins, take them with food to promote absorption.
Take an aspirin a day…if your healthcare provider says it’s okay. I believe aspirin in moderation on a daily basis can help prevent diseases such as heart attack and some form of cancer. But, again, don’t take my word on this.
Hope you are enjoying this new series of posts on longevity! If so, please share them with your preferred social media network.

10 Wellness Tips for Your Self
There are many, many things you can do to keep yourself healthy. Staying healthy will help you maintain your youth. Many of these wellness tips are so easy you won’t even realize you’re promoting your good health.
Have a cold? Skip the antibiotics. A cold is a viral infection. Antibiotics are only good for bacterial infections. So…save your money.
Looking for a cold medication? This wellness tip can also save you money. Avoid the medications that multi-task. Simple medications cost less and focus on the symptom bothering you most.
Hot tea is good for making your throat feel good when you have a cold. Saline nasal drops help your nose feel better, too.
Don’t spread your cold germs around. Wash your hands frequently and don’t share your eating and drinking utensils.
When you come down with colds and/or hay fever, take the evening off. Climb into bed early and sleep an extra hour.
Don’t store your meds in the bathroom. Bathrooms tend to be too humid and too hot. These two conditions encourage deterioration.
Now might be a good time to quit smoking. Have you tried to stop smoking several times, this time switch to a pipe for a while. But, think of this as only a step toward freedom because pipe smokers and cigar smokers not only suffer from lung cancer but also get throat and mouth cancer.
Don’t take acetaminophen for an extended period of time without consulting with your primary healthcare provider. Long term regular use of these pain relievers can damage kidneys and liver. Occasional use of these drugs are safe for most people.
Make sure your smoke detectors are in working order. Replace any smoke detector that’s more than ten years old. If your smoke detectors are younger than ten years old, get an aerosol spray tester at a hardware store that simulates smoke.
Avoid raking leaves if you have allergies.
Hopefully these wellness tips are interesting and useful to you and your household.

Healthy Sleep-
SLEEP WELL
Some of us sleep well. Some of us wish we could sleep well. And, some of us battle sleep and try to improve it. And, for some, this is a lifelong endeavor. Sleep simply eludes us .
Even though I sleep well, I fall in the category of those who try to improve my sleep. Through the years, I’ve developed some techniques that give me a successful night’s sleep not just once in awhile…but most nights.
Sleep is a priority with me. And not just a decent sleep, either. I want and need a good night’s sleep every night.
An important step I take each evening before I get into bed is establish a sleep intention. I do this every evening because I want my sleep to be restful and serene. I want to sleep throughout the night because my goal is to wake up rested and ready for the coming day. This is the intention I set each evening before I get in my bed.
CAFFEINE…OR NOT
I begin preparing for sleep each evening in the morning before I leave home. My caffeinated drinks are exclusively early day beverages and I taper off the caffeine as the day goes on.
One way I do this is limit my coffee to no more than five cups a day. Even though five cups is my limit, often I never even get to five cups. I enjoy unsweetened iced tea so I may drink more tea than coffee.
As midday rolls around, I switch to a latte. I may occasionally have a decaffeinated coffee in the afternoon. But, not often.
Most of the time, my afternoon drink is a large unsweetened iced tea.
TV TIME
When I’m home relaxing, I resist the temptation to watch “just one more program”. And, I limit my email time after dinner. And, neither my TV nor my computer can be found in my bedroom because they can interfere with my sleep.
A SLEEP SCHEDULE
I try to maintain a sleep schedule so that I go to bed pretty much the same time every evening and I get up about the same time on weekdays.
A PERFECT BEDROOM
My bedroom is the most serene room in the house. The walls are a pale cream color. The carpet is a quiet brown. I have several pieces of art on the walls which make me feel calm and positive. Sleep comes easy in this room.
And, my bed is perfect! I love it. The mattress is sooo comforting.
Are your sheets comfortable? Some people love cotton sheets. Others prefer flannel sheets. I’m on the flannel sheet side of the argument. I love the feel of the flannel sheets every night of the year.
When you buy sheets, carefully check the labels to be sure that you get what you pay for. Be sure your sheets are good enough quality that you can wash them in hot water and put them in the dryer.
Is the sheet fabric tightly woven enough to keep away dust mites, pet dander, and other allergens.
Whatever you choose, make sure you have sheets and blankets that you like. You need to like the color. You need to like how the fabric feels when you touch it.
And finally, you need to feel your bedding is inviting.
THE TEMPERATURE
Is your bedroom too hot or is it too cool? The last thing you want is to sweat or shiver throughout the night because when you’re shivering or sweating, you are not sleeping.
YOUR APPLIANCES
Your sleep doesn’t need to be disturbed with computer, smartphone, TV, and other appliances beep. So, they don’t belong in your bedroom.
CLEAR OUT THE CLUTTER
Clearing out the clutter in your bedroom really helps. An uncluttered space is calming, inviting, serene. Go for it! Try clearing out the clutter about fifteen minutes a day until the room is all cleaned out. You’ll feel better and sleep better for it.
When I started clearing out the clutter, I felt things would look better in my bedroom but I was unprepared for the wonderful difference an uncluttered space made in my sleep.
MOVE YOUR HOME OFFICE TO SOMEWHERE ELSE
Ban your office from your bedroom. When you bring your work to your bedroom, you make it harder to unwind as you think about tomorrow’s problems before you try to go to sleep.
There are a kazillion other things you can do to improve your sleep. I’ll be discussing them over time. Some of the suggestions I’ll bring up may not interest you. Try what seems good to you. As you discover what improves your better sleep, you’ll benefit from the changes.
You may find you look better, feel better, and think better. It’s worth the effort to change your habits and environment.

What is Healthy?
What is healthy, anyway? We’re all concerned about our health on some level. We try to eat better, exercise more, sleep more. There are many components to good health, but, at it’s basic level, what is healthy, anyway?
For starters, a leaner body is healthy. But, losing weight and keeping it lost can seem like chasing the Fountain of Youth.
And, of course, there is the old story about Ponce de Leon finding it. The Fountain of Youth headquarters is in St. Augustine, Florida. You can go there and visit it in a park setting. But, you don’t need to travel all the way to St. Augustine to visit the Fountain of Youth. Branches are right in your own community, maybe even in your neighborhood. Every fitness center around is a branch of the fountain of youth. All you have to do is join up and use a fitness center. The sidewalk in front of your home or office is also a branch of the fountain of youth. All you have to do is get out there and walk briskly for thirty minutes or so every day.
Using your fitness center regularly or walking briskly for a half hour each day will decrease your risk of developing diabetes. This will keep you on the path toward good health. And, while you exercise to protect yourself against diabetes, skipping sugary soft drinks and juices will help. And, if you have diabetes, find out from your health care professional how much exercise you need every day to strengthen your body as you work with this disease.
Trips to a fitness center and/or the healthy walks will help you develop a healthier heart and will help you reduce your risk of heart disease.
What is healthy? Visiting your local fitness center or walking helps you feel, look, and act better. It will also reduce your cholesterol levels. Add some dietary tips when you want to be healthy and you’re thinking of cholesterol. Use olive oil more often when you substitute it for less healthy oils, for example.
A brisk daily walk will strengthen your bones. You can also garden. Actually, the more things you can think of that will get you off your seat and on your feet, the better. And, while you’re getting off your seat, try walking a little faster on the sidewalk and running a little faster on the treadmill. A more intense workout will help you feel better.
What is healthy? Lowering your stress level is one way to improve your health. Hug your pet. And, if you don’t have a pet, can you hug a neighbor’s pet? Can you go to your local pound and walk a dog there? If you go to your pound and walk a dog briskly for a half hour, you’ll be doing two beneficial things at once!
And, what about your memory? Blueberries help. So do crosswords, scrabble, your local newspaper.
And, finally, what is healthy? Connection is healthy. Humans like to be connected to one another. This can mean different things to different people. Taking a class in something will help. Meeting the other people at the fitness center will strengthen your connection to your community. There are a million ways to get connected. A church, synagogue, or temple is there waiting for you. The important thing is to share yourself.
So, here are a few ways to help you define what is healthy for yourself. Find something you like and share yourself.

Eight More Tips for a Good Night’s Sleep.
I can blog posts until the end of time and never overestimate the benefits of a good night’s sleep. A healthy night’s rest is one of the most important things a person can do to maintain a youthful appearance and lifestyle.
- Sleep Improves your Memory. As you sleep, your brain organizes your memories for you.
2. Adopt a Sleep Schedule. Try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day. As you work on your sleep schedule, allow yourself eight hours sleep in every 24-hour period. This can be a real help because your body will soon prepare itself to sleep in the evenings when it’s time to go to bed. Your circadian schedule will really help you out here.
3. Make your bedroom dark at night. It’s easier to sleep in a darkened room. The darker you can keep your bedroom at night, the better.
4. Check your meds. There are many meds which can interfere with your normal sleep. Check the meds you’re taking. Change out any meds and/or foods and beverages which might be the culprits.
5. Nothing is more likely to induce sleep than being in the dark. Night time is when we produce melatonin.
There are things we can do to encourage sleepiness. When night approaches, keep your lights down low and avoid overhead lighting. Use dimmer switches on lights and lamps.
While you are enjoying a calming evening in a darkened room, this is a good time to enjoy softened and restful music. Or, this is a good time to do some gentle yoga stretches. Or, this is a time to do some calming breathing. Finally, this is a good time to enjoy the cool stillness of the night air, the stars in the sky, a moonlit night.
But, whatever you do, include darkness as part of your nightly routine.
6. High Blood Pressure? Sleep helps lower blood pressure and elevated stress hormones. Get treatment.
7. Valerian has a reputation for improving sleep quality. Taken properly, this may work for you.
8. Anxiety, Depression, and Tension are three common causes of insomnia. If you think you suffer from one of these, get treatment. Treating your anxiety, depression, or tension may well take care of your insomnia issues.
As you try out these different tips, remember that getting from insomnia to a good night’s sleep is a journey. You’ll find things that work and things that don’t work. And, none of it will work or not work 100% of the time.
