Stress Busting Starts Here!

Let’s face this right now.  Diets are stressful.

So is everything else when you’re dieting.

Even before you settle on the diet you’re going to adopt, find your stress busters.  .

The bottom line is this:  choose activities to do when you feel stressed.  You don’t want to eat to combat stress.

Choose your healthy coping mechanism from dancing, gardening, journaling, meditating, puzzles, reading, singing, volunteering.

If you are a member of the right gym, you’ll be able to take advantage of stress busting activities offered.  These may include yoga, zumba, spinning, and dozens of other activities.

Cultivate simple things you can do at home and at work to lift your spirits.  These can include midday walks and  playing relaxing music.

The idea is to have activities which don’t include munching on nuts and candies.

Walking 10,000 steps daily is a good stress reducing goal.

A weekly bodywork session can only be good for you and your diet success.  Of course, I recommend reflexology, reiki therapy, or mindfulness meditation.

Your options are in the hundreds.  Choose the most relaxing options for you and your lifestyle.

Two effective stress-reducing habits which can help you include keeping an appointment calendar and an ongoing to-do list.

Life is filled with small stressors which can be avoided with a calendar and a list.

For example, with a to-do list at the grocery store, you won’t leave out a key ingredient for a meal.  This seems like a small enough thing but if you’re stressed already, that missing item can be the one that complicates your life.

A calendar will make sure you don’t miss an appointment.   Your life can be streamlined and easier if you use it to help you shop, keep up with friends and relatives, make appointments.

In reality, you’ll lose less time because you forgot something or someone.

When you include a gym membership in the mix with the calendar and the to-do list, you’ll be much more organized.    You’ll be more physically fit.  Your new diet will be an easier experience.

Healthy Blood Pressure – 6 Things You Can Do.

We all have a blood pressure.  We don’t see it.  We don’t  feel it.  Unless someone checks our blood pressure, we don’t  know we have it.  And, unless someone tells us our blood pressure is bad, we don’t even think about it.

That makes high blood pressure a quiet killer.  While we go about our lives unaware of the situation, hypertension damages our blood vessels, heart, and eyes.  High blood pressure is a set-up for heart disease, stroke, dementia, and kidney disease.

So, pay attention to your blood pressure.  When your blood pressure is high, your heart is working too much to do its job properly.  This stresses your arteries.

So, what can you do to get your blood pressure down to normal?

For starters, STAMP OUT YOUR CIGARETTES.  Smoking, whether cigarettes or pipes, is not good for your arteries.  When nicotine reaches your blood vessels, they constrict –  which is not good for you.

GET A PET – Statistically, people with pets have healthier blood pressure scores.  So, what is the best pet for you?  I, personally, love dogs and cats.  But you don’t have to get something that barks and meows.  Birds, fish, snakes, even a gold fish  make good pets.   The important thing is to get one that is good for your situation.

DO YOU HAVE A HOBBY? – Find something that you really enjoy and can get interested in.  Drawing, writing, skating, running, walking, and a thousand and one other things can be just what you need to calm your hypertension.

GET RID OF YOUR EXTRA WEIGHT.  –  When you lower your weight you’ll have better blood pressure scores, you will also feel better and look better.    And, this is a segway right into the next suggestion:

NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING – Some foods encourage a good blood pressure score.  Fruits and vegetables are good.  Some people feel oatmeal has magical qualities.  You’ll have better luck with this if you get several  sessions  with a nutritionist whose training aligns with your health needs.

EXERCISE HELPS, TOO!  Yoga is good.  But, so is anything else you do regularly.  This includes almost any physical activity you like.  The important thing is to move.

Not included in this list is pills.  I think they are important and have been taking my blood pressure medication daily for decades.    Just like everyone else I know, I objected to them for a long time.  Once I admitted that I needed them, life became better.  This is a decision for you to make, though.  Everyone I know who takes a hypertension medication, including myself, went through stages of resistance.

After all, it’s hard to face up to needing a medication for the rest of my life.  But, once I matured into this reality, my health improved and my attitude about myself certainly got better, too.

Thanks so much for reading this article.  There are many other posts in this blog which will help you lower your blood pressure.  I hope you get time to check out a few of them.

Healthy Investments

Every day offers new opportunities to make healthy investments in ourselves.   And, for me, the best investment I can make is the investment I make in my good health.

Below, I’ve listed some new things you can choose from to invest in your own good health.  Enjoy!

MOVE FOR 30 MINUTES!  This can be a quick walk during the day, or a trip to the fitness center to hop on a treadmill for thirty minutes.  Or it can mean a bike ride or a dance class or a yoga session.  But, whatever you choose, the important thing is  you choose to move for at least thirty minutes every day.  This healthy  investment  will pay for itself in dividends many times over.

BRUSH YOUR TONGUE for one minute every day.  Your breath will smell better and your mouth will thank you.

KEEP A CALENDAR.  Make a healthy investment in a smoother running day.  The best way I know to get your day organized and your life simplified is to keep an appointment calendar.  It doesn’t have to be large or elaborate.  But, to keep track of where you’re expected to be each day can reduce stress because you’ll be less likely to forget an important appointment.

BREAKFAST IS YOUR MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY.  Don’t skip it.

TAKE A VITAMIN.  Just choosing which vitamin to take each day can be stress inducing.  But, there are a few guidelines which can simplify the job.  For starters, skip the time-release formulations.  They may not be good for you and sometimes they elevate the price.  Select a vitamin which doesn’t have a lot of additives such as sugars, artificial colors, preservatives.  Skip chelated minerals.  Vitamins are healthy investments.

GET ALL YOUR PRESCRIPTIONS AT ONE PHARMACY.  Pharmacists  offer good advice on many illnesses and diseases.  Developing a relationship with your pharmacist is a good healthy investment.  A pharmacist  can be a good source of information for you.  But, only if you get all your medicines from the same place.  Otherwise, the pharmacist may not be completely aware of your situation.

TRY TO HAVE THE LEAST STRESSFUL DAY POSSIBLE.  This means that you begin by promoting a calm attitude.  Can you have a stress free commute?  Begin each day by completing a to-do list for your day.  Be  as specific as possible.  Print this list out on brightly colored paper (so you won’t lose it).

SCHEDULE SOME READING TIME.   Spend at least fifteen minutes each day keeping up with activities in your areas of interest and work.

SLEEP IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN EXPERIENCE.  Make sure you schedule enough sleep in every night.  I know I keep writing about sleep but, honestly, it’s one of the most important things you do.  When you sleep, your brain, your organs, your skin perform functions that are not done when you are awake.  Sleep is essential and enough sleep is important.  Sleep is a healthy investment.

KEEP HYDRATED.  When we’re stressed, we forget to drink enough liquids.  Liquids keep you awake, alert, refreshed, as well as prevent disease.  So, drink up!  Drink water, teas, juices.  But, mainly, drink water throughout the day.

So, here you have the health lineup for the week.  Hopefully you’ll find things that you can use to be healthier in your daily life.
