{"id":2858,"date":"2018-12-09T15:09:01","date_gmt":"2018-12-09T15:09:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/reflexologyforthespirit.com\/blog\/?p=2858"},"modified":"2018-12-09T15:09:01","modified_gmt":"2018-12-09T15:09:01","slug":"practical-wellness-10-tips-you-can-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reflexologyforthespirit.com\/blog\/2018\/12\/09\/practical-wellness-10-tips-you-can-use\/","title":{"rendered":"Practical Wellness:  10 Tips You Can Use"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/reflexologyforthespirit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSCN02101.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1333\" src=\"http:\/\/reflexologyforthespirit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSCN02101-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reflexologyforthespirit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSCN02101-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/reflexologyforthespirit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/DSCN02101.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With this article , you and I move into part two of\u00a0 practical wellness tips in the longevity series.\u00a0 The focus\u00a0 shifts\u00a0 to information\u00a0 less disease focused.\u00a0 \u00a0My hope is that you&#8217;ll adopt a few, or maybe more than a few,\u00a0 healthy habits and avoid or discard the habits in your life which lead to illness.<\/p>\n<p>The best way to have a long and healthy life is to prevent disease\u00a0 and promote homeostasis while you adopt\u00a0 practical wellness tips which resonate with you.<\/p>\n<p>As you\u00a0 adopt new wellness habits, you empower yourself and\u00a0 \u00a0take control of your body and your health.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll be in charge of your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual self.\u00a0 Practical wellness tips offered in these articles are often easy to adapt to your daily life.<\/p>\n<p>Seeking a long and healthy life is an everyday proposition made easier when you adapt practical wellness tips which may\u00a0 change through time.\u00a0 You can always make improvements\u00a0 \u00a0as new theories and practices become the norm.<\/p>\n<p>As you adopt new habits, I hope you&#8217;ll consider the long term effects of the new directions you&#8217;re taking in your life.<\/p>\n<p>Your body\u00a0 constantly moves and shifts\u00a0 which means\u00a0 you are different every single day from your cellular level on up.\u00a0 These new tips you adopt can change\u00a0 your life in small or large ways as your body self regulates toward wellness.<\/p>\n<p>Adapt these practical wellness tips and changes to your age.<\/p>\n<p>As a reflexologist and Reiki practitioner, this ability to change, move, develop means much to me.\u00a0 That is the heart of healing with the modalities I&#8217;ve been studying my\u00a0 whole adult life.<\/p>\n<p>All of this points toward homeostasis &#8211; the balance of all body systems.<\/p>\n<p>CHOOSE YOUR FATS WISELY &#8211; One of the most challenging\u00a0 things I&#8217;ve done with this wellness blog is tackle oils.\u00a0 If you go to the early blog posts, you&#8217;ll find articles reflecting how complicated life can get as you stand in front of the grocery shelf and choose a cooking oil.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line in cooking :\u00a0 Go with organic oils.\u00a0 \u00a0 Stay away from saturated fats whenever possible.<\/p>\n<p>That means I buy\u00a0 organic olive oil.<\/p>\n<p>I avoid saturated\u00a0 fats .\u00a0 \u00a0Whipping cream is not a staple in my diet and I don&#8217;t eat much red meat.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that, things get a bit dicey.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t eat margarine because of the chemicals.\u00a0 I do eat\u00a0 butter.<\/p>\n<p>Omega 3 Fatty Acids can be consumed by pills or by the spoonful.\u00a0 Choose your Omega 3 Fatty Acids carefully because they can be contaminated.\u00a0 I buy mine at the Village Apothecary here in Woodstock at 79 Tinker Street.\u00a0 I rely on my pharmacist, Neal Smoller, to educate me about which and how many supplements I should take.<\/p>\n<p>How you deal with fats and oils in your diet is up to you, your health, and how comfortable you are with manufactured foods.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I&#8217;m not comfortable with manufactured foods so there&#8217;s not a lot of oil variety in my kitchen pantry.<\/p>\n<p>WHAT ABOUT MINERALS? &#8211;\u00a0The body uses many minerals and they don&#8217;t get near the attention that vitamins receive.\u00a0 Four minerals to concentrate on right now include Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, and Selenium.<\/p>\n<p>Calcium is found in broccoli, dairy products, pinto beans, and spinach.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re concerned about osteoporosis, this mineral is for you.\u00a0 Eating foods high in calcium is important.<\/p>\n<p>Magnesium is not found in our diets often.\u00a0 Unless you eat apples, bananas, beans, brown rice,\u00a0 leafy green vegetables, and nuts, you should take a supplement.<\/p>\n<p>Magnesium holds off heart problems, strokes, and lack of energy.<\/p>\n<p>Selenium boosts the immune system.\u00a0 Any mineral boosting the immune system is a friend of mine.<\/p>\n<p>Potassium is extremely important and is found in bananas.\u00a0 I eat a banana twice a week.\u00a0 Potassium combats hypertension, depression, muscle weakness, and fatigue.<\/p>\n<p>BEWARE OF THE HOSPITAL! &#8211;\u00a0We are all probably going to be in a hospital once or twice (or even more) before it&#8217;s all over.\u00a0 Lots of things can go wrong in a hospital.\u00a0 It&#8217;s your job as the\u00a0 patient to know as much as you can about the hospital you are going to be in, the doctor who is going to treat you there,\u00a0 and the condition you are trying to get treated.<\/p>\n<p>I have reflexology clients who visit my table regularly because they feel it&#8217;s important for their overall wellness.\u00a0 They don&#8217;t ever plan to be in a hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Regular reflexology sessions definitely promote homeostasis which is good for disease prevention.\u00a0 But, for a person to categorically plan to never be a\u00a0 \u00a0hospital patient can be an unwise move.\u00a0 You never know when an accident can put you in an emergency room.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to know about hospitals and to be insured .\u00a0 It&#8217;s important to have a health care professional that you visit at least annually so you don&#8217;t get caught in a situation where you don&#8217;t know who can help you or how to communicate with the professionals there.<\/p>\n<p>Hospital is its own language. If you don&#8217;t do these things to know the language, you may not\u00a0 have the vocabulary or understanding to make the best decision for your own health&#8217;s sake.<\/p>\n<p>A healthcare advocate is important if you have a major encounter in a hospital\u00a0 setting.\u00a0 When you are injured in an accident, or are ill, you may not be alert enough to protect yourself.\u00a0 And, if you haven&#8217;t kept up with modern medicine, you may not be strong\u00a0\u00a0 enough to protect your self.<\/p>\n<p>INJURIES, FALLS,\u00a0 AND\u00a0 CAR ACCIDENTS &#8211; For every person who dies in an accident, fifty or so are injured and live. These fifty or so people may sustain minor injuries or multiple injuries or major injuries. A few of them will be disabled and\/or have their lives shortened by the injuries received during the accident.<\/p>\n<p>If you are interested in a long and healthy life, you do not want to be a part of those statistics.\u00a0 Because most injuries are preventable,\u00a0 accident awareness can be important to you.<\/p>\n<p>Are you interested in avoiding accidents?\u00a0 If so, think\u00a0 back on the things your family and teachers cautioned you about when you were young.<\/p>\n<p>Never drive buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Always wear your seat belt.<\/p>\n<p>Never swim alone.<\/p>\n<p>Keep stairways free of clutter.<\/p>\n<p>Put non-skid strips in your bathtub.<\/p>\n<p>I think you get the drift here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/reflexologyforthespirit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Reckless1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2145\" src=\"http:\/\/reflexologyforthespirit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Reckless1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reflexologyforthespirit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Reckless1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/reflexologyforthespirit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Reckless1.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>DON&#8217;T BLAME YOUR GENES! &#8211; They count but the choices you make in your daily life count more.\u00a0 \u00a0You are in charge of you.\u00a0 Your longevity is all about knowing that the things you do today affect your future.<\/p>\n<p>If you read\u00a0 about something which everyone says is good for you and you disagree,\u00a0 follow up on your feelings.\u00a0 Ask questions. Get to the heart of the matter.<\/p>\n<p>GET TO KNOW YOURSELF. &#8211; Spend a couple of months getting to know yourself and your body better.\u00a0 Ask yourself some questions and pay attention to the answers you share.\u00a0 Take some notes.\u00a0 The goal is to get a close look at your body.\u00a0 It is unique, the only one like it in the world.<\/p>\n<p>How do you feel in general?<\/p>\n<p>How well are you sleeping?<\/p>\n<p>Do you have any aches and pains?\u00a0 If so, where are they?<\/p>\n<p>Do you feel healthy?<\/p>\n<p>Is it hard for you to get out of bed in the morning?<\/p>\n<p>How bad is your stress level?<\/p>\n<p>Are you happy?<\/p>\n<p>What do you\u00a0 want to change in your life?<\/p>\n<p>Ask\u00a0 your own questions.\u00a0 based on your individual\u00a0 age, physiology,\u00a0 values, beliefs, and\u00a0 your own personal circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>TAKE SOME MEASUREMENTS! &#8211; This should be fun if you are into apps.\u00a0 Or, if you&#8217;re into a fitness watch.\u00a0 Mine keeps me active throughout the day as it reminds me when I&#8217;ve been sitting too long.<\/p>\n<p>With a Fitbit or a Garmin, you can track\u00a0 everything\u00a0 you do throughout the day.\u00a0 This may not be such a bad thing.\u00a0 The point is that you become more aware of your physical, mental, emotional, spiritual self.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u00a0 track\u00a0 your body&#8217;s clocks, you can control\u00a0 your homeostasis patterns.\u00a0 Your can track your waking\/sleeping cycles,\u00a0 eating times,\u00a0 physical activity\u00a0 patterns,\u00a0 and medication schedules.<\/p>\n<p>When you do this, your body will function much more efficiently.\u00a0 It\u00a0 will\u00a0 have the opportunity to become finely tuned.<\/p>\n<p>EAT REAL FOOD &#8211;\u00a0 If you can&#8217;t understand the words on the ingredients list, the product you are holding in your hand is probably not food.\u00a0 Most likely, it is a selection of chemicals that have been manufactured and blended for human consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Stay away from these manufactured products if you are interested in health and longevity.<\/p>\n<p>Ideally, the food you eat will be just that:\u00a0 food.\u00a0Select foods that are fresh or flash frozen.This means you will shop mostly from the produce aisle or frozen food aisle.<\/p>\n<p>MAKE THE PRODUCE MANAGER, THE BUTCHER,\u00a0 \u00a0AND THE WOMAN BEHIND THE FISH COUNTER YOUR BEST FRIENDS &#8211;\u00a0 They will tell you where the food came from, which selections are the best buys.\u00a0 They know the farmers and ranchers who supply the supermarket with the food you are buying.<\/p>\n<p>When you go to the farmer&#8217;s market, get to know the people selling the food in the stalls.\u00a0 These are the people who are supplying you with the best available, locally grown\u00a0 foods.<\/p>\n<p>You just can&#8217;t get better than this.<\/p>\n<p>EAT THE FOOD THAT WORKS FOR YOU &#8211;\u00a0 Every time I go into my local book store, I see a new selection of cookbooks promoting another new diet\/eating lifestyle.\u00a0 Their practical wellness tips may or may not be included in these cook books.\u00a0 It all depends on the ingredients that the author suggests in the recipes.\u00a0 The truth is that I support the diets that depend on fresh, locally grown food.<\/p>\n<p>Important for any diet you adopt:\u00a0 You must enjoy what you eat.\u00a0 Traditional diets will outrank any diet that relies on manufactured ingredients.\u00a0 Processed food is not good for anyone.<\/p>\n<p>Thank
