is a serious quest because\u00a0 you have to decide not only how long you want to live but also what you plan to do with all those years you plan to have.<\/p>\n<p>SUNSHINE HELPS YOU<\/p>\n<p>Get out into the sun for a few minutes\u00a0 every day.\u00a0 Ten to 15 minutes of sun daily will help you store the &#8220;sunshine vitamin&#8221; which will help your body use the calcium necessary to\u00a0 stay healthy for a longer life and avoid osteoporosis.<\/p>\n<p>THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH<\/p>\n<p>In 1513, Juan Ponce de Leon\u00a0 landed at\u00a0 what is now Saint Augustine, Florida, in search of the fountain of youth.\u00a0 He found it there.\u00a0 And, it still exists.\u00a0 Branches of the fountain of youth can be found today in your neighborhood.\u00a0 They are found on the sidewalk where you walk\u00a0 as you exercise.\u00a0 They are\u00a0 also found in the fitness center in your community.<\/p>\n<p>Exercise is a premiere activity for a longer life.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t matter much what exercise plan you have.\u00a0 Running?\u00a0 Weight lifting?\u00a0 Self Defense?\u00a0 Yoga?\u00a0 Whatever you choose, you need to like it enough to do it several times a week.\u00a0 For me, regular exercise is the\u00a0 Fountain of Youth in action!<\/p>\n<p>STAY CONNECTED<\/p>\n<p>Be a part of your community.\u00a0 \u00a0The most important thing is that you\u00a0 develop strong social ties.\u00a0 You can get active in a church or synagogue.\u00a0 Or\u00a0 join a book club.\u00a0 Donate time at a library or food pantry.\u00a0 Collect stamps.\u00a0 Whatever you do,\u00a0 choose something you&#8217;ll enjoy and show up regularly.\u00a0 Your blood pressure will go down.\u00a0 Your immune system will improve.\u00a0 Your heart\u00a0 will work better.\u00a0 You will have yourself on a path to a longer life.<\/p>\n<p>DRINK TEA<\/p>\n<p>Take time each day to enjoy a cup of tea or a glass of iced tea.\u00a0 Relax, and refresh.<\/p>\n<p>While you enjoy your tea,\u00a0 know that it will boost your immune system because tea is rich in antioxidants which fight cholesterol and cancer.\u00a0 Tea loves to fight free radicals.\u00a0 W hen you drink more tea, you&#8217;ll be drinking fewer soda drinks which don&#8217;t have the antioxidants and can&#8217;t fight diseases like cancer and cholesterol.<\/p>\n<p>GET RID OF PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL STRESS.<\/p>\n<p>Stress is not a problem in and of itself.\u00a0 Stress is a word describing how you respond to an event causing mental tension and worry.\u00a0 \u00a0 I do not know anyone whose life is not filled with stress.\u00a0 Stress affects your health when it\u00a0 weakens the immune system and contributes to\u00a0 disease.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve written much about stress in my book &#8220;Healer&#8217;s Handbook&#8221; and in other articles in this blog.<\/p>\n<p>Reiki therapy and reflexology are good anti-stress activities.<\/p>\n<p>Exercise, meditation, a positive mental attitude work to support your ability to shed stress.<\/p>\n<p>DEVELOP YOUR STRENGTH<\/p>\n<p>There are many, many kinds of exercise.\u00a0 Choose one that works for your body and your lifestyle.\u00a0 But, whichever one you choose, include strength training.\u00a0 Strength training is every bit as important as cardiovascular workouts because the strength we develop and maintain in our back, core muscles and legs is what is going to keep us upright as we age and live longer.\u00a0 Strength training keeps the spine straight.\u00a0 Strength training prevents falls.\u00a0 Check with your healthcare provider when you begin a strength training fitness program.<\/p>\n<p>My physical therapist, Carolyn Abedor,\u00a0 teaches a weekly yoga class which she calls &#8220;Posture&#8221;.\u00a0 I attend this class every week and depend on it to help straighten my spine,\u00a0 my core muscles and my legs.<\/p>\n<p>CHOLESTEROL<\/p>\n<p>Do you know your scores?\u00a0 It&#8217;s a good idea to learn, if you don&#8217;t.\u00a0 Once you know your cholesterol scores, you&#8217;ll be more interested in things you can do to make your self healthier for the long haul.<\/p>\n<p>VOLUNTEER<\/p>\n<p>Statistics show us that people who volunteer live longer than those who don&#8217;t.\u00a0 \u00a0 Do you have time in your life to give of yourself?\u00a0 If so, choose an activity which puts you in direct contact with people at least an hour every week.<\/p>\n<p>This task is probably mandatory if you are seriously interested in longevity.<\/p>\n<p>GIVE UP A FEW THINGS<\/p>\n<p>Multitasking creates unnecessary stress and the efficiency gains you experience aren&#8217;t that much of a plus in your life.\u00a0 This becomes real\u00a0 when you\u00a0 find yourself caught in a trap of serving demanding people and situations which steal your energy.<\/p>\n<p>Your spirit will tell you when it&#8217;s time to\u00a0 reduce your To-Do list and learn to say &#8220;no&#8221; to demanding people.\u00a0 \u00a0Simplifying your life can become a spiritual process.<\/p>\n<p>HALT HYPERTENSION<\/p>\n<p>Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is the most common cardiovascular disease in America.\u00a0 There are three things to know about hypertension:<\/p>\n<p>For the most part, hypertension is\u00a0 preventable with proper diet and lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Many people\u00a0 suffer with hypertension and don&#8217;t even know it.<\/p>\n<p>Hypertension leads to kidney failure, damaged eyesight, cognitive impairment, and other situations.<\/p>\n<p>There are four things you can do about hypertension:<\/p>\n<p>Cut down on salt.<\/p>\n<p>Lose excess weight.<\/p>\n<p>Keep moving.<\/p>\n<p>Pitch the cigarettes.<\/p>\n<p>DODGE DIABETES<\/p>\n<p>Diabetes is a disease which, in many cases, can be prevented and controlled.\u00a0 Like hypertension, diabetes is a silent\u00a0 disease for many people.<\/p>\n<p>And, if you are interested in living a longer life, you need to respect it because diabetes can trim 10 years off your life expectancy.<\/p>\n<p>If you think you have diabetes, or if you have diabetes, get yourself on the correct eating plan, get active, and do the things your healthcare provider
