Five Things You Can Do For Your Good Health

Good health is not that hard to achieve.  Really.  When it comes down to a bottom line, five things are essential to establishing and maintaining your good health.

NOT SMOKING IS ESSENTIAL.

Do you smoke?  Reduce your habit to five cigarettes a day.  When you are  down to five, you can get to zero with little effort.

Join a smokers’ support group.

Hypnotherapy and Biofeedback both offer successful results for many smokers.

The bottom line is this:  Do whatever you have to do to give up this habit.

MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT.

This is a high priority.  Losing or gaining weight to reach your ideal weight for your good health gets harder with every passing year so the younger you are when you work on your weight, the easier it will be.

Weight Watchers is a good support group.

An interested nutritionist can help you reach your desired goal and include specific foods contributing to your continued good health at the same time.  You’ll get twice the bang for your buck with a nutritionist.

An example of this:  If you need to gain or lose  weight and you have heart health issues, a nutritionist can work on the weight issues along with your heart issues.  I don’t know about you, but I love to be able to do a couple of things together.  I get all involved in the different aspects of synchronicity.

EAT MANY FRUITS AND VEGETABLES.

Many wellness gurus teach five servings of fruits and vegetables are a minimum number for a well nourished person to eat daily.  This five serving recommendation is easy for me to pass on.  And, it’s also easy to have fun with.

I like the concept of thinking about which five fruits and vegetables will be on my  plate today.  Planning ahead for each day’s selection gives them focus and importance.

I also like the idea that advance planning gives me a chance to play and experiment a bit.  You can do this too.  It’s easier than you think.  All you have to do is choose one new vegetable or fruit each week.

Take it home and learn what it’s called.  What countries is it commonly grown in?  Learn how to cook it, store it, combine it with other foods, and finally how to eat it.

If you learn about one new fruit or vegetable each week, your dietary skills will be vastly different in a year.  Adventure!

EXERCISE REGULARLY.

This can be a drudgery or it can be fun.  Your good health options are open here.  Participate in  one or more activities  regularly.  The point is to keep yourself active  daily as you go throughout your life.

You can put in as much time or money as you want here.

You can also combine exercise with other daily habits. I wear an exercise watch which beeps when I’m not moving enough.  It also congratulates me when I’ve gone beyond my daily goal.

I went out and got a second job which requires that I stay off my seat and on my feet.  So, I’m making money while exercising.  I enjoy this a lot.

AVOID STRESSORS.

This can be a biggie.  Stress contributes to many health problems.  Like the sleep suggestion a few pages back, you’ll find a chapter on stress later in this book.  Things like meditation, walks, laughter, sharing, singing, nature bathing, journaling, drawing can help you avoid stress.

Stress relief is important – just as important as your diet and exercise.

Spiritually, your back is your support for life.

Spiritually, your back gives you strength.  It honors you.  Your spine contains your central system and your central blood supply.  You register every experience, feeling, impression, and thought in your spine.

Your lower back holds financial support and your core beliefs.

Your middle back supports your move forward in life as you release the past.  Your middle back holds love.

Your upper back deals with your emotional support of others and self.  It deals with guilt, shame, fear, anger, resentment.

Back aches are spiritual events.  What may offer relief for one person may not work for another.  In spite of all the modern, 21st century techniques, cures, and therapies available for back injuries and health injuries, you may respond positively to reflexology, Reiki therapy, and Chakra healing.

Lifestyle changes will help if you discover physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual causes of your discomfort.  When that happens, you can make adjustments to get rid of the pain.  Then, you can figure out what you need to do to keep the pain and discomfort from returning.

These changes may include things like developing a posture encouraging spinal alignment.  You may learn specific exercises offering you relief.

Several times throughout your day, talk to your back.  Is it in pain?  Does stretching help?  Are your shoulders scrunched up against your neck?

As time passes, you’ll find you are learning the language of your spine.  Once you learn this, you can listen to what your spine says to you and follow its instructions.

To avoid back pain, respect your spine and don’t overwork it.  The three basic rules of respect include proper lifting techniques, exercises to build strong back muscles, and proper fitting low heeled shoes.  Following these three guidelines, you’ll prevent accidents and reduce spinal alignment stress.

When you consult with a physician about your back pain, select a person who gives you confidence.  If you seek a massage therapist, acupuncturist, physical therapist, schedule your appointments so they’re 24 to 48 hours of one another to take advantage of synchronicity.

Yoga helps.  I’m fortunate that there are many yoga teachers in my area.  Through the years, I’ve found two teachers who know about spinal health and focus their classes on this specialty.  Carolyn Abedor teaches Iyengar Yoga when she focuses on therapeutic spine health.  Kathy Karey teaches yoga and focuses on repairing injured spines.

Massage and physical therapy are beneficial for chronic pain.  Chiropractors work to improve your condition without adding more strain to the spine.

If you don’t know a yoga teacher, massage therapist, chiropractor or physical therapist, this is a good time to look for one.

CHAKRAS:

Lower back pain focuses on the first chakra.  Middle back issues focus on second and third chakras.  Your upper back deals with fourth and fifth chakras.

Reflexology Blog – Spiritual/Emotional System

Spiritual SystemPage0009THIS SYSTEM IS COMPOSED OF THE MIND, HEART, EYES, SOUL, CHAKRAS, AND ENERGETIC LAYERS SURROUNDING THE PHYSICAL BODY, AND THE ENTIRE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

As the journey goes, recognizing one’s spirituality varies from person to person.  The differences aren’t important.  What’s important  is  we understand the value of our spiritual well being relative to the overall health of  the whole body.

Try to understand and respect the spiritual differences in each client partner.  Spiritually, everyone is different with no wrongs or rights.  Make every effort to support the client’s spiritual beliefs to help the client achieve good spiritual health.

THE QUESTION ARISES:  WHAT IS THAT?

We can’t address the question without understanding the cultural, religious, and ethnic differences in our client partners.  These should always be respected and acknowledged when appropriate.

With a client partner from a different culture, please try to learn more about cultural behaviors and communication styles within that culture.

GOOD SPIRITUAL HEALTH INCLUDES A CONNECTEDNESS WITH ONE’S INNER SELF AND WITH OTHERS.  It can include a life with meaning and purpose.  It can include faith, hope, peacefulness, love, forgiveness, and worship.

For many, the most elusive word is forgiveness.  Many health care providers offer forgiveness prayers for their clients.    Some healers feel  healing is impossible without forgiveness.  Your job is to assist your client partner to achieve and maintain spiritual balance and health.

Reflexing the nervous system can be a very spiritual experience for your client partner.  For many, it facilitates a communication flow between the brain and the divine.

RECOGNIZE WHEN A CLIENT IS WORKING THROUGH LOSS AND GRIEF.    Your sessions can assist and support the client in this journey.

The endocrine system is the foundation of the Spiritual/Emotional System.  This is the primary system that Reflexology for the Spirit addresses.

The Endocrine system and the chakras are very closely aligned and influence one another.

Balanced chakras are a necessary component of good spiritual and emotional health. That’s what Reiki therapy does best.  Have you learned Reiki therapy yet?  It’s easy to learn.  It’s fast, incorporated easily into a Reflexology for the Spirit session and brings homeostasis.  As your client reaches and maintains homeostasis, the spirit becomes healthy, too.  Once the chakras are balanced and the spirit begins to achieve good health it will become the driving force in the journey to homeostasis.    You can assist your client partner on this journey without Reiki therapy but it’s easier with it.

The question arises:  What is Reiki therapy?  At its lowest common denominator, Reiki therapy is the laying on of hands.  The practitioner calls in the Reiki energy (universal life force) and offers a light touch to a clothed body as healing is offered.

Reflexology Blog – Headaches Always Have a Muscular Component

tree

Headaches have many causes:

Alcohol

Drugs

Emotional Stress

Excessive Noise

Food Allergies

Glaring Light

Poor Diet

Tension in the Neck

Tension in the Shoulder Muscles

Vision Problems

On a spiritual level, the causes are just as numerous:

Feeling out of control

Frustration

Overwhelmed,

Overcrowded

Over thinking

Self Critical

Undermined

A good first step in dealing with headaches is to figure out what is happening in your life just before a headache begins.  This investigation may require  a headache diary.

Begin by keeping track of everything you are eating.  You want to find out if a food can be the cause of your headaches.  Marge D’Urso always said that two biggest causes of headaches are wheat and dairy.  She recommended that a good first step in dealing with headaches is to give these items up for six weeks.

Keep track of your environment and how it’s affecting you.  Describe your feelings. You’re looking for  evidence of repetitive behavior and/or attitudes which may affect your headaches.

Record your headaches:  location, duration, severity.

There’s a muscular component to all headaches.  Addressing this component involves regular visits to a reflexology for the spirit practitioner.  Regular sessions relieve stress,  encourage homeostasis, improve day-to-day functioning.

Record your sleep patterns.  Is insomnia a factor?

Thyroid and adrenal hormone imbalances can cause headaches.  Visit an endocrinologist.

NOTE:  If you discover that the headaches recur regularly, you need to visit a medical professional.

When offering a reflexology session to a headache sufferer, begin by working the solar plexus and diaphragm reflexes.

Work the nervous system as you focus on the brain reflexes.

Work the respiratory system as you focus on the sinuses.

Work the digestive system as you focus on the pancreas.

Work the sense organs as you focus on the ears and the eyes.

Work the muscular system as you focus on the arm, shoulder, and neck muscle reflexes.

Work the spinal reflexes.

End the session as you spend a few moments on the liver and solar plexus.

Asthma – a Very Real Spiritual Disease

Asthma is a condition involving severe breathing difficulty due to allergies, emotional and/or spiritual stress as well as other issues.  Asthma  attacks include shortness of breath, cough, generalized wheezing, and abnormal breathing.

Spiritually, people suffering with asthma seem, to me, to be trying too hard to please others.  When people are trying to be perfect, they sometimes have trouble standing up for themselves and expressing their feelings.  Asthma sufferers often feel controlled, hurt, stuck, and caged.

Asthma is one disease which is rising rapidly in our country.  Many children suffer with asthma.  My opinion is that children suffer with asthma when they are pushed toward independence too soon.  The children may feel insecure.  The relationship to the mother is important here.

As the child grows up, the relationship issues are more often involving the boss in a work relationship.  As an employee, the person has trouble breathing for him/herself.  The person feels helpless and is in a situation where suffocation describes the situation.  And, of course, stressful events just make the asthma worse.

Emotions felt here include a need to express one’s feelings and emotions.  Anger, grief, lost boundaries.

The person suffering with asthma can do several things, the first of which is to have a competent health care professional actively involved in the situation.  Asthma is not a situation where a person self treats.  ACUTE ASTHMA ATTACKS REQUIRE MEDICATION IMMEDIATELY.

A good first step is to identify allergens, and take steps to reduce the allergic threshold.  This means taking allergy shots.  This can save or eliminate much discomfort.

Eating a diet suitable for asthmatics can significantly improve your health.  Generally speaking, a vegan diet is  best for an asthmatic.  This diet eliminates all animal products.  Your positive response to this diet might be slow so plan to eat a vegan diet for several months  before you notice dramatic reduction of asthma symptoms.  Consult with a nutritionist to make sure  you are eating the best foods for you and your condition.

Try to eat pure foods as food additives can contribute to asthma attacks.  Basically, avoid processed foods as much as possible.  Stick with fresh, organic foods whenever possible.

Be sure to get a sufficient amount of omega-3 fatty acids daily.

Vitamin C, Magnesium,  and B6 are also helpful.

Let your nutritionist guide you through the food supplement maze.

Whenever I need supplements, I go to Liz at the Woodstock Apothecary.  She is their staff nutritionist.  Her knowledge and experience have saved me money and improved my health.

When using Reflexology for the Spirit to offer sessions to an asthma sufferer, begin by focusing on the solar plexus and diaphragm.  Then work the endocrine system focusing on the pituitary gland reflexes and then the adrenal gland reflexes.  Work the respiratory system focusing on the lung reflexes.  End the session by working the intestinal reflexes.

Disorders of the Respiratory System are very Common. Their Causes are Both Physical and Spiritual.

Respiratory SystemBecause we don’t store oxygen, we must constantly breathe to keep our bodies oxygenated. The respiratory system is composed of the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and our lungs with bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli.  The diaphragm muscles are also part of our breathing system.  As we breathe, our nasal passages act as generalized filters which clean out some toxins and also warm or cool the air before it gets to the lungs.  Breathing not only supplies oxygen and gets rid of carbon dioxide, it also enables us to speak.

When we reflex the diaphragm muscles, we stimulate the diaphragm and solar plexus to relieve stress, regulate breathing, and to relax.

Our breath is, quite simply, our life force.

It reflects our feelings at any given moment.  An important way to offer support in this area is work the solar plexus.  The solar plexus is a group of nerves in the abdomen controlling adrenal gland and muscular function in the intestinal walls.

This is where our third chakra is located and where we get the feelings of “butterflies in the stomach”.

We can improve a situation by changing our breathing rate or depth.

Many people go through life without knowing how to properly breathe.

Encourage yoga classes.  Refer your client-partner to a teacher who knows about breathing and teaches it regularly in class.  If you can’t find a yoga teacher who meets your needs regarding breathing, take continuing education classes and incorporate breathing techniques into your practice.

Encourage your client partners to schedule appointments with you within 48 hours of a yoga class to boost the effects of both sessions.

Respiratory disorders are very common.  Smoking, dusty environments, poor air quality, allergies, and chemicals in the air are major causes of respiratory ailments in addition to the spiritual and emotional issues which also contribute.

Working the respiratory areas in the feet can help relieve bronchitis, asthma, emphysema, to name a few.  Also, working the respiratory areas in the feet also helps clear congestion, inflammation, and assist breathing.

When offering Reflexology for the Spirit to someone suffering from respiratory difficulties, make sure they are sitting up at a 30 degree angle.  This promotes easier breathing and reduces the chance of coughing during a session.

Always work the solar plexus to promote a strong respiratory system.

If a client partner is having trouble breathing (due to congestion, etc.), admits to serious snoring, has allergies,and/or has a chronic cough, there are several things you can, and should, do.  Refer him/her to an ear/nose/throat specialist.  People don’t realize that snoring can be a serious health risk.

Avoid having a client-partner with undiagnosed sleep apnia, a serious condition requiring skilled medical attention.  You are not referring someone to an otolaryngologist to get rid of him/her.  You want your client-partner to have the condition evaluated medically so the proper healing procedures can be followed along with your ongoing reflexology.

If someone has allergies, encourage a commitment to visit an allergist.  A good allergist provides injections to significantly improve the quality of life.  That way, your client partner will have the best chance of achieving optimum respiratory health.  Whatever medical attention is needed and received means that s/he will fare better with proper medical attention in addition to reflexology.  Once the acute situation is taken care of, continued reflexology sessions will support wellness.

Maintaining a healthy respiratory system takes a commitment to Reflexology for the Spirit sessions regularly.   They offer a much needed opportunity for homeostasis which is very important.  People suffering with respiratory system issues are often carrying anger, bitterness, grief, hate, loneliness.  Learning about forgiveness is an  important step for healing.

Please note that the respiratory system interacts closely with both the cardiovascular and digestive systems.  Whenever possible, work all three systems when you are trying to deal with respiratory issues.

Sense of Sight – Eyestrain

Physical causes of eyestrain include excessive eye fatigue which can result in headache. Other causes include stress, overuse of eyes at work or at video or computer monitors. Poor lighting, incorrect eyeglass/contact lens prescriptions.
Spiritually and emotionally, vision problems go hand-in-hand with emotional traumas, fear, and rejection of the outside world. It has been said that our eyes are the mirrors of our soul.
Relief is available for people suffering with eyestrain. Better lighting, better eyeglasses, Reflexology for the Spirit sessions. But also, the client partner needs to look at lifestyle issues and work to relieve stress, overuse of eyes.
As you offer reflexology sessions, be aware of the need for homeostasis. Deep relaxation is important.
Work the urinary system with a focus on the kidneys, work the sense organs with a focus on the eye reflexes, work the arm and shoulder reflexes, work the spine reflexes, work the lymphatic system and finally focus on the solar plexus and diaphragm reflexes.

Tinnitus is a Spiritual Event

One way we perceive our world is through sound. This perception is influenced by our emotions and spiritual reactions to life events. We hear things and we also listen to what we’re hearing. We interpret the things we hear and listen to. We not only hear and listen to events happening around us but we also hear and listen to our inner voice.
My conclusion here is that hearing and listening is both highly emotional and spiritual. Reduced to it’s lowest common denominator, the concepts we hear can touch our core beliefs in ways that go straight to the heart and soul. Our attitudes, opinions, and feelings about what we hear may or may not be based on facts, or statistics, or even what’s real. Often, our attitudes cannot be changed by facts, statistics, or information.
Our feelings, beliefs, educational background and training, life experiences, all influence what we feel, see, and hear. Our responses include these influences.
Tinnitus is a ringing, hissing, or buzzing in the ears which has no external origin.
In my opinion, Tinnitus occurs when a person no longer trusts his/her own voice. Tinnitus occurs when your body tells you it’s time to pay more attention to your inner voice, to your feelings, to your inner self.
Reflexology for the Spirit sessions are important in the life of a Tinnitus sufferer.
Work the respiratory system with emphasis on the sinuses, work the sense organs with emphasis on the ears, work the entire endocrine system and finish up the session with working the liver and the solar plexus. Homeostasis is very important here and that is exactly what your sessions will offer.

Reflexology Blog – Ear Infections are common in young children and can be dangerous.

Ear infections are often connected with respiratory tract infections. They can be either caused by bacterial or fungal infections brought on by water or other foreign matter in the ear. They can be either chronic or acute.
Ear infections are so common that about half of all visits to pediatricians are for their treatment. This is an important statement because spiritually, ear infections occur when a person is having trouble hearing what is going on around them. Children sometimes have difficulties expressing feelings.
So…what might a child be hearing that will distress him/her to the point of an infection? Abusive language, people shouting at one another, bullying behavior. An earache suggests that the subject is very disturbing to the child. It represents a pained heart or mind.
Adults dealing with ear infections have the same spiritual issues. Words that come to mind here are resentment, unsteadiness, being judged, blame, frustration, anger, arguments.
And, of course, the most difficult voice to hear sometimes is that of the inner self.
That being said, ear infections can be very serious. Ear infections are potentially dangerous health events and need to be supervised by a physician.
The bottom line here is this: If someone has an ear infection, s/he needs to seek medical care to take care of the physical aspects of the disease. S/he also needs to deal with the painful sounds and events in life which are stressful enough to contribute to ear infections.
Reflexology for the Spirit can help, but not replace the medical attention needed. When working the feet, focus on the sense organs with emphasis on the ears, work the spleen, work the lymphatic system, and complete the session by working the liver and solar plexus. What you will bring to the table, which is very important, is relief, calm, homeostasis, an encouragement of the body systems to fight the situation.

Ear Disorders are Both Physical and Spiritual

Physically, ears have many disorders.
Outer ears have infections, cuts, burns, frostbite, ruptured eardrums.
Middle ear problems go with upper respiratory infections. Young children suffer with ear infections. Some of these infections are connected with respiratory-tract infections as well as infections resulting from water or other foreigh substances entering the outer ear.
Inner ears suffer with allergies, infections, reactions to medications.
Spiritually, people have health issues with the ears when a person has difficulty coping with what s/he is hearing. Our ears help us maintain our balance. Listening is very challenging if the subject matter causes pain or discomfort.
At times, it is difficult to hear one’s inner voice. Listening to one’s inner voice may, at times, be more difficult than listening to someone else’s voice.
When offering Reflexology for the Spirit sessions to a person with ear disorders, it’s the goal to offer the client partner an opportunity to experience grounded listening.
Begin the session by working the sense organs focusing on the ear reflexes. Focus on the spleen and liver reflexes. Move to the lymphatic system, and finish the session with a focus on the solar plexus.
