Five Things You Can Do For Your Good Health

Good health is not that hard to achieve.  Really.  When it comes down to a bottom line, five things are essential to establishing and maintaining your good health.

NOT SMOKING IS ESSENTIAL.

Do you smoke?  Reduce your habit to five cigarettes a day.  When you are  down to five, you can get to zero with little effort.

Join a smokers’ support group.

Hypnotherapy and Biofeedback both offer successful results for many smokers.

The bottom line is this:  Do whatever you have to do to give up this habit.

MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT.

This is a high priority.  Losing or gaining weight to reach your ideal weight for your good health gets harder with every passing year so the younger you are when you work on your weight, the easier it will be.

Weight Watchers is a good support group.

An interested nutritionist can help you reach your desired goal and include specific foods contributing to your continued good health at the same time.  You’ll get twice the bang for your buck with a nutritionist.

An example of this:  If you need to gain or lose  weight and you have heart health issues, a nutritionist can work on the weight issues along with your heart issues.  I don’t know about you, but I love to be able to do a couple of things together.  I get all involved in the different aspects of synchronicity.

EAT MANY FRUITS AND VEGETABLES.

Many wellness gurus teach five servings of fruits and vegetables are a minimum number for a well nourished person to eat daily.  This five serving recommendation is easy for me to pass on.  And, it’s also easy to have fun with.

I like the concept of thinking about which five fruits and vegetables will be on my  plate today.  Planning ahead for each day’s selection gives them focus and importance.

I also like the idea that advance planning gives me a chance to play and experiment a bit.  You can do this too.  It’s easier than you think.  All you have to do is choose one new vegetable or fruit each week.

Take it home and learn what it’s called.  What countries is it commonly grown in?  Learn how to cook it, store it, combine it with other foods, and finally how to eat it.

If you learn about one new fruit or vegetable each week, your dietary skills will be vastly different in a year.  Adventure!

EXERCISE REGULARLY.

This can be a drudgery or it can be fun.  Your good health options are open here.  Participate in  one or more activities  regularly.  The point is to keep yourself active  daily as you go throughout your life.

You can put in as much time or money as you want here.

You can also combine exercise with other daily habits. I wear an exercise watch which beeps when I’m not moving enough.  It also congratulates me when I’ve gone beyond my daily goal.

I went out and got a second job which requires that I stay off my seat and on my feet.  So, I’m making money while exercising.  I enjoy this a lot.

AVOID STRESSORS.

This can be a biggie.  Stress contributes to many health problems.  Like the sleep suggestion a few pages back, you’ll find a chapter on stress later in this book.  Things like meditation, walks, laughter, sharing, singing, nature bathing, journaling, drawing can help you avoid stress.

Stress relief is important – just as important as your diet and exercise.

Reflexology for the Spirit and the Big Five: A Summary

Page0004 (1)There are many books at the book store and library about cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke and COPD.  It’s in your best interest to learn as much as you can about how they come about and how they are treated both allopathically and alternatively.

Hopefully, in the future we won’t discuss medicine using words such as allopathic, alternative, and complementary.  The goal we work toward is integrative.  Medicine will be much more successful when people are treated with an integrative approach focusing on prevention.  The knowledge you glean from these studies will not substitute (nor should it) for a medical diagnosis.  However, the more you know about your client-partners and their diseases, the better practitioner you will be.

One of the biggest failing of the allopathic medical community is that its physicians no longer treat the patient as a whole person.  The spiritual part has been absent in this healing modality for years.  This is what you, the Reflexology for the Spirit practitioner bring to the table.

You, as a successful practitioner, become a tool for disease prevention, maintenance, and healing for the body, mind, and soul.

Reflexology for the Spirit and Cancer

This post is part of the series on the Big Five Diseases.

For cancer prevention, the story is pretty much the same as for heart disease.  Get the cholesterol in the healthy range.  Get the exercise program going to shed the excess weight.

Cancer is a group of diseases, actually.  So, when we talk cancer, we talk about more than just one illness.

DIET IS IMPORTANT IN CANCER PREVENTION.  There is a correlation between fat and meat and cancer.  Add fruits and vegetables to your diet and add plenty of fiber.  Avoid excess sun exposure.  Use sunscreen.  Take your vitamins.  Skip the tobacco.

One factor contributing to cancer is extreme stress tolerated over a long period of time.

Other risk factors include secondhand smoke, air pollution, workplace exposure to chemicals, exposure to radon gas, heavy alcohol consumption, obesity, overexposure to sun, sedentary lifestyle, age, family history, polyps in the colon, diet low in fiber and antioxidents, and diabetes.

Offering a Reflexology for the Spirit session 48 hours after a client partner has received  chemotherapy will help him/her feel much better.  This person will experience a deep sense of relaxation and an opportunity for the body to return to balance through  encouraging  homeostasis.

When someone you know  suffers with cancer, encourage him/her to continue all treatments the allopathic specialists have to offer.  Your job is to assist your client partner and support him/her in the return to homeostasis through the other treatments s/he receives.

Reflexology for the Spirit does not replace allopathic cancer treatments.  Your sessions with cancer patients can be very effective when combined with Reiki therapy and essential oils.  Reiki therapy can be offered daily.  As a practitioner working with a cancer patient, you’re dealing not only with the physical parts of the disease but also the emotional and spiritual aspects:  fear, anger, rage, helplessness, abandonment.

ESSENTIAL OILS: balsam fir, Canadian red cedar, clove, dill, galbanum, grapefruit, hyssop, lemon, myrtle, nutmeg, orange,  patchouli, sandalwood, tarragon, thyme, tsuga, valerian

When using essential oils on a cancer patient, consult with an aromatherapist to choose the proper oil for the particular type of cancer your client has.

Work all body systems including the liver and solar plexus.

Reflexology for the Spirit and the Big Five

SEVERAL DISEASES STALK US ALL.   Although it’s difficult to know exactly what causes them, markers exist letting us know where they fit in the overall scheme of things.  Some  things are certain.

Reflexology for the Spirit plays a significant part in promoting overall wellness, disease prevention, and disease management.  These diseases can be prevented and/or managed with some healthy lifestyle habits.  Emphasizing disease prevention and health promotion with Reflexology for the Spirit is important.

Focusing on prevention can decrease disabilities, increase the quality of life for your client partners, and reduce their health care costs.

Changing health damaging habits such as smoking, sedentary lifestyle, and poor diet can have a dramatic effect on your client partners.  These changes can have a ripple effect in their communities.  When you encourage your clients partners to practice disease prevention, you offer them an opportunity for a healthier future.

THESE DISEASES CHALLENGE US IN DIFFERENT WAYS BASED ON OUR AGE.    Being knowledgeable of these challenges and how they present themselves to us offers  valuable tools to prevent the diseases themselves.  The five biggest threats to our health are:

Heart Disease,

Cancer,

Stroke,

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease,

Diabetes.

Interestingly enough, the risk factors and markers for these diseases are similar (with only a few exceptions).

THE RISK FACTORS COMMON FOR ALL FIVE DISEASES ARE ELEVATED CHOLESTEROL, POOR DIET, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, TOBACCO USE,  SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE, EXCESS WEIGHT OR UNDERWEIGHT, AND DIABETES.

In the next six posts, I will explore each of these diseases and, finally, offer a summary.

The Circulatory System – There is a definite spiritual aspect which Reflexology for the Spirit addresses.

scan 10 001

The circulatory system is composed of the heart, arteries, veins, capillaries, and blood, and it actually exists everywhere in our bodies.  The heart is an amazing creation about the size of your fist.  It’s your hardest working muscle – always working, whether we’re asleep or awake.  The heart is a two-sided pumping station with four chambers separated by valves that keep our blood flowing in the proper direction.  The chamber or atrium on the right and the right ventricle pump the oxygenated blood back through the body.  The muscular walls or septum divide the heart’s two sizes and keep the two kinds of blood from mixing.

The chambers and ventricles of the two halves are separated by a valve.  The left side of the heart and the right side of the heart are separated by the septum.  The valves keep the blood flowing in one direction only.

Arteries carry blood from the heart to every part of the body.  As the arteries branch out they become smaller until they become capillaries.

As the blood returns to the heart, it moves in veins.  The beating heart keeps the blood moving continuously throughout the body.

Because the circulatory system exists throughout the entire body, the reflexes are found throughout the entire foot.  However, the heart reflex itself is found primarily on the left foot.  Working the entire foot works this system and you help to circulate new energy to every cell.  Working the entire foot focuses on  this system.  You help  circulate new energy to every cell.

Several diseases affect the heart and the circulatory system so it’s important to take care of the heart.  Heart disease and stroke are major causes of death in our country.

Heart diseases do not occur overnight.  By the time a person begins to suffer from high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart attack and/or stroke, the problems causing these diseases have been lurking in the body for decades.

Circulatory diseases, for the most part, are preventable with lifestyle changes and regular reflexology sessions.

If a person has a “wake up call” before getting on the right path, there is still hope.  As soon as the lifestyle changes begin, better health is often on the way.

When examining the feet, always note any red blotches, representing anger, callouses on the heart area of the foot, indicating concealed deep feelings or the need for protection.

When you work the Digestive System, you Help the Intestinal Trct Normalize Itself

Constipation is common in people seeking the services of Reflexology for the Spirit Practitioners.  The good news is that the condition seldom continues as regularly scheduled Reflexology for the Spirit sessions progress.  This is true of both children and adults.

Risk factors for constipation include a sedentary lifestyle, eating a low-fiber, high-fat diet, not getting enough liquids and, in my opinion, not getting enough vitamin C.

It’s difficult for the human body to achieve optimum health without a clean intestinal tract.  Many conditions throughout the body can be improved as the intestinal tract begins to function properly.

Often, when you have a client partner coming for regular session to deal with constipation, you  will begin to see a person who feels better, looks better, develops better eating habits, has more energy, and has a more generous outlook on life.

Although sessions offer a gentle detox, a colon cleanse followed by a liver cleanse will improve things immensely.

In normalizing colon function, dry brushing after bathing, lymphatic cleansing with exercise, weekly Reflexology for the Spirit sessions and regular use of a mini trampoline in addition to the cleanse will help.

AREAS TO WORK:   digestive system, immune system, lymphatics, urinary system, liver and solar plexus

ESSENTIAL OILS:   anise, peppermint, ginger, fennel, tarragon

Calluses and Corns Can Be Troublesome and Represent Spiritual Challenges

The impact  calluses and corns have on your client partner depends on where they’re located on the foot or toes.

For many, they’re protective armor and a defense mechanism representing the soul crying out for protection from unbearable outside events.  For example, a callus in the heart area of the foot deals with protection from problems of the heart that have become difficult.  Calluses and/or corns on the throat area of the foot represent problems relating to communication.  And, calluses on the heel area connect with core beliefs.

There’s a relevant place for Reflexology for the Spirit when dealing with these spiritual issues.  If you have a client partner coming to you regularly with calluses and/or corns, please refer him/her to a podiatrist to treat the medical aspects.  People shouldn’t self treat these conditions because they can end up with worse problems than they began with.  And, if your client partner is diabetic, it’s even more important to seek medical help.

Several trips to the chiropractor are in order here if your client partner’s gait is being impacted upon.  A properly aligned spinal column helps overall health.

After that, it’s up to you, the practitioner to facilitate the spiritual and emotional healing which accompanies regular sessions.

Your client partner should be able to move forward as issues resolve.

AREAS TO WORK:

ESSENTIAL OILS:  tea tree, lavender, Roman or German chamomile.

Bunions are Definitely Spiritual Afflictions

They’ve been around for generations and generations.  Because of their location on the foot, bunions are a way of dealing with love (the loss thereof).  People suffering with bunions lack a sense of carefree acceptance of anything.

Professionals don’t totally agree on what causes them:  flat feet, ill fitting shoes, congenital disposition toward bunions, etc.  This much is certain:  getting surgery to repair bunions is becoming more popular.  Having bunions recur after surgery is also a reality.  Reflexology for the Spirit practitioners can help both before and after surgery.

Wearing proper footwear is important.  You can be a real help to your client if you notice what kind of shoes s/he is wearing and either approve or suggest shoes that you think might be more appropriate.  The wrong kind of footwear can be very destructive to your client partner’s foot health as well as his/her overall spinal alignment.  Bunion sufferers should wear shoes that are well-fitting, non-binding, and have a generous toe box.  They shouldn’t have a heel  higher than 2 inches.  Sandals can offer relief.

If the bunion sufferer also has arch problems, a trip to a professional who can properly fit an arch support is also important.

AREAS TO WORK:  Apply rotations to the solar plexus.  Work the skeletal system, muscular system, nervous system, neck area (with neck rotations on the toes), and the circulatory system.  And, always work the bunion area and all the toes.

ESSENTIAL OILS:  angelica, bergamot, geranium, lavender, ylang ylang, frankincense, lemon, palmarosa, rosewood, jasmine, helichrysum, sandalwood, Roman chamomile.

The next post will focus on Callouses and Corns

Arthritis and Reflexology for the Spirit, Continued

treeWhen an arthritis sufferer uses all the health care professionals available to him/her, the results are better.  Fewer drugs will be consumed.  That’s an important result.

A Reflexology for the Spirit practitioner deals with the problems presented by arthritis over the long haul.    When working with an arthritis sufferer, you need to learn about all the things s/he can do in the self help arena.  Try to learn all the things that the rheumatologist recommends.  When you know these things,  you can work with them.  Know about recommended exercise therapy. How does acupuncture fit into the overall picture?  What does the nutritionist recommend?

Optimum improvement depends on repeated, regular visits to the Reflexology for the Spirit practitioner’s table.  The other specialists will “come and go” as needed in the client partner’s life.  You, on the other hand, owill be seeing this person weekly.

Arthritis sufferers often postpone getting needed treatment necessary for  relief.  This is not a good approach.  The sooner your client partner begins to aggressively combat arthritis, the better off s/he will be – even years down the line.

When working with an arthritis sufferer, regardless of the type, keep in mind that you are dealing with a person who cannot help being overly critical both of self and others.  Many arthritis sufferers appear to harbor resentment and blame in many areas of life.  This is a huge statement considering the number of people suffering with arthritis.

AREAS TO WORK:  solar plexus, entire endocrine system, urinary system, immune system, nervous system, digestive system, circulatory system, liver, solar plexus and individual joints the client partner is suffering with.

ESSENTIAL OILS:   wintergreen, peppermint, nutmeg, German chamomile, clove, copaiba, helichrysum, Idaho balsam fir, white fir, pine, eucalyptus globulus, frankincense, and myrrh are popular with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis sufferers.

Violet Flame Reiki therapy is appropriate for arthritis sufferers.

The next post will cover bunions.

Anxiety and Reflexology for the Spirit

modernAnxiety sufferers are often adults who feel they experienced emotional neglect and trauma as children.  Anxiety can also “run in families”.  Sometimes, people on certain long term prescriptive drugs exhibit anxiety symptoms.  Anxiety is present when a chemical imbalance exists in the brain.  It’s diagnosed by symptoms.  And, some experts feel that anxiety affects more women than men.

Offer your anxiety sufferers an opportunity to enjoy the benefits of essential oils and Reiki therapy in addition to Reflexology for the Spirit sessions.

AREAS  TO WORK:  solar plexus, nervous system, digestive system, urinary system, endocrine system, adrenals, liver and solar plexus.

Always offer a few moments with a solar plexus hold if you feel a person is suffering with anxiety.  Reflexing the solar plexus offers the body an opportunity to achieve deep relaxation and grounding.  If your client partner is taking prescriptive drugs,  herbs, or other medications for a medical condition, please work the body systems that apply.

ESSENTIAL OILS:  orange, Roman chamomile, ylang, ylang, lavender

Thanks again for reading this blog.  Please leave a comment if you have a comment or question.

The next two or so posts will deal with arthritis.
